How many, how powerful a gun do you need and how much ammo?

Posted on 12/06/2015 6:35:04 PM PST by Jim Robinson

Hard to say. How many and how powerful were the guns used to bring down the two Muslim terrorists in San Bernardino?

What if it is just you standing in defense of your family?

Before I can answer the question I first must ask some questions of my own:

How many guns might my potential enemies have?

How powerful are their guns likely to be?

How much ammo might they have?

My answer will be, then, "more than them."

You may want to check with your friend and ensure he was not talking about the M1 carbine, which is/was a notorious pipsqueak.

The M1A shown in that post shoots the .308 Win/7.62 NATO, only a shade less powerful than the 30-06 the GIs carried in Korea. Never heard any complaints about the M1 stopping anyone.

When I have silhouette targets, always practice head shots.

+1

Who cares if you miss a couple of times? If a jihadi is bad enough to keep his feces collected with bullets whizzing by his noggin, he deserves to get you.

This is just right for carrying in the trunk and will make short work of ragheads in an urban environment.

A plus is that it uses the same ammo as an AK, which you should have for traveling out in the country or in any long range situation.

Of course UZI or POF has a long line of similar style small weapons in 9mm if you are worried about unleashing 7.62x39mm in the city limits.

If these are too pricey they make these or very similar in .22LR for less than half the price.

Minimum for the glove compartment is a colt 45 1911, or if you want more rounds a Glock 9mm holds 15 or 17.

For CCW anything you like.

Sidearms are for before the first shots ring out. Once you hear gunfire get to a safe location, take cover in a good firing position, whip out the long gun , and wait for the bad guys to come to you.

AA-12 would be a great defense weapon. Big dumbass brother says we cant have one though.

“You may want to check with your friend and ensure he was not talking about the M1 carbine, which is/was a notorious pipsqueak.”

Ah! That resolves it. Yes, he was talking about the M1 carbine, from personal experience. He said his unit was being charged by a ChiCom wave, and he was shooting at a large soldier. He knew he was hitting because he could see puffs of dust and filling from the quilted jacket, but the guy kept coming. His CO put the man down with a .45 cal. The man has passed away now, but I remember it was most definitely the M1 carbine. I used to hang on his narratives.

My fail for not identifying the weapon in the image correctly.

.22 rounds from a rifle barrel are a lot more surprising in damage than many people think. Shorter pistol barrel, yes, less power.

Long range: rifle... Mid-range: shotgun ... Close range: pistol

Never forget the consideration of one or more cutting weapons.

You can run out of ammo. A blade can stab through a thug’s kevlar vest.

To address the headline only.
AS MANY, AND IN AS LARGE A CALIBER AS I CAN GET.

“Now, if they shoot and miss and you’ve got a shotgun and you’re a close enough range, both could be brought down pretty easily.”

Yup. Remington 870. My weapon of choice. They kind of get lost in all the cooler stuff. With slugs, buckshot and some practice, you have a similar effective range to the AR’s in a mass shooting situation. And a lot more punch.

There are several now on the market which are reliable, semi-automatic, use magazines for reloading and are accurate out to 200 yards. The Ruger 1022 is popular, but the Marlin 795 is a superior shooter and there are 28 round mags for it as well as a pistol grip draganov stock. For the money, the Mossberg 702 Plinkster is a very good shooter but stick with the factory 10 round mags. GSG makes a nice replica of the HK weapons, and it has a 110 round drum mag which works just fine.

Since you ask about the .22lr tools, if you intend to 'work' after the WORL arrives, a sound suppressor would be a good thing to plan for. Threading a barrel is not really that difficult with tap and die, and there are adapters available to attach an oil filter yet get good visual using an optic on top of the housing. Get the adapters now, while still available. You don't need to do anything with them until the collapse arrives. After it arrives, you will not be able to acquire them.

Pelvis then noggin ... but they’re harder to hit when writhing on the ground.

If you have old eyes use optical sights.

I used to compete in centerfire/rimfire pistol matches in San Diego in the 1999 time frame. I've acquired some new pistols with short barrels recently. I was displeased with my 4 inch groups at 7 yards (3.5 inch barrels). I suspected my vision wasn't up to snuff with the 3 dot iron sights and my new bifocals. The groups were left of center too. I put my trusty pin-hole aperture on my right lens. That solved it. A 5 shot group. Dead center. 3/4" group. Old eyes and changes in prescriptions can screw with your marksmanship. While I'm happy with the improvement, it is still a drop in performance from 1999. I could maintain one fat hole with 15 rds at 7 yards with 38SPL from a 4" 686+ (single action). Life goes on. Practice. Figure out what works. Fix what has broken over time.
