Toward the end of every month, hospitals in California see a curious uptick in admissions for hypoglycemia, the kind of low blood sugar that can affect diabetics.
The pattern, detected in a recent study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, is almost entirely driven by low-income patients.
The non-poor don't show much change in admissions at all.
The researchers suspect this trend may point to an underlying challenge for the poor: Food stamps, given out in a lump sum at the start of each month, run out for many families before they reach the end of it.
Where grocery stores in poor neighborhoods often report a rise in business when food stamps are electronically debited, hospitals may see the result when they run out.
That paper, led by Hilary Seligman, is one of several relatively new studies suggesting that the level of food assistance we currently give families â the average family of three gets $374 a month â isn't enough for a month's worth of meals.
A new report from the White House Council of Economic Advisors corralling this research shows that the short-term effects show up in some surprising ways. Amid the well-documented long-term effects of food stamps in alleviating hunger and easing poverty, week to week it looks as if the food stamp cycle may also influence hospital admissions, student test scores and even childhood behavior.

If we are going to save the country we MUST end the practice of paying people to feed, breed and vote Democrat.
I see so many welfare parents stuff their children with cookies, cakes and candies.
At least the manufacturers of those products are getting a good profit from their political donations!
I read the article, watched part of the video (too much f’ing, plus it didn’t have the same impact once I knew it was staged, by leftists with an obvious agenda, yet).
I thank you for the link, though, because the article proves once again the disingenuousness and dishonesty of the left-as if that $36 per year per taxpayer is the only way we get gouged to support these leeches. What about Section 8, WIC, free school meals, subsidised utilities, and more? Do they think we don’t know about a good many of the freebies these leeches get, and probably at least a dozen scams they pull to get even more illegally?
I don’t care if it’s $5 a year, it’s our damn money they’re taking to give away to others so they can preen themselves on their “generosity”. The Generosity Index survey tells me what I need to know about that-that the poorest states, mostly southern, give the most to actual charity of any states in the union-voluntarily, often through their churches, not through government threat and force-and the rich northeastern leftist states are some of the stingiest-and when they do give, it’s not primarily to charity, it’s to “endowments for the arts” or something like that for their own entertainment and “cultural enrichment”.
Your dad should write an article about those experiences. It would be interesting, and open some eyes.
Another problem I see, is that EBT users do their *shopping* at a quickie-mart ....where food stuffs are much more expensive than regular grocery stores.
Seldom, do I observe EBT people shopping with coupons in hand.
Also they buy prepared foods...rarely cooking from *scratch*, which should be less expensive. I see them purchase store-roasted chicken, when they could roast a Purdue chick at home in about an hour...for .89/lb.
I’ve noticed a few convenience stores near me which have had ‘EBT machine out of order” signs taped up for a few years now. LOL!
I’m so sorry for you. What a horrible loss!
I said a prayer for you.
From your writing, you appear to be a strong, caring person.
I married a strong, caring Single Mom who was working her behind off.
I don’t know if marriage is what you want, especially so soon after your loss, but there are plenty of us guys who respect, admire and fall for strong, caring women.
I pray things go good for you.
Not easy to find women on welfare and food stamps who are not obese.
Yes indeed, I forgot to mention that-the vehicles I see them loading their steaks and grape drank into. My husband tells me that they most likely lease them, but I don’t understand how they can even get a lease, their credit must be at best non-existent if not shot to hell.
There are two kinds of cards.
The EBT card can be used for anything.
The SNAP card is the “Food Stamps” card and is used for food items that require some type of preparation - like Ramen.
So when you see people using “two” cards one is the SNAP for the food items and the second is the EBT for the other stuff.
With what I've witnessed as a customer, I'd have to say they are true. I've been behind people buying expensive food with the WIC card, then behind that is another group of items (electronics, beer, smokes, wine, etc...) that is paid for in cash. They wear expensive-looking (i.e. not WalMart brand) clothing, and drive cars worth far more money than mine. They seem to have the latest smart phone with them, as well.
meat, eggs, veggies, rice, beans, bread, fruit, fish, and dairy.
Not juice, not soda, not candy, not anything else.
I’ve read somewhere that that’s called “First World Problems”.
Well, then the taxpayers would have to pony up for free day care for their 9 children under 10 years old. So we’re screwed no matter what.
Food stamps sell for 50% of face value at the quick-e-marts.
This past year after reading about how difficult it is to live on food stamps, I voluntarily cut our grocery spending for a family of 4, plus 4 animals to $600 per month, this budget also covered personal care products, cleansers etc. My husband needs meat every night and loves his coca cola. We stayed in budget, except for this month, we will go over due to Christmas parties etc. I had to be creative, cooked/baked from scratch but it can be done. I work full time too and have a daughter in college. I believe home economics should be mandatory class for graduating high school.
In my state most adult recipients do have jobs. I believe the mean number of jobs was 1.3 per family unit or close to that.
A safety net, not a hammock... my God... that is so perfect.
And many of those who pay for their hammock with their taxes, sleep on the bare ground. That’s the part that pizzes me off-I don’t care if they drive gold-plated Escalades that I will never be able to afford, I just get mad that they do it with mine and my husband’s money.
Most states combine SNAP and TANF onto the same EBT card.
