Toward the end of every month, hospitals in California see a curious uptick in admissions for hypoglycemia, the kind of low blood sugar that can affect diabetics.
The pattern, detected in a recent study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, is almost entirely driven by low-income patients.
The non-poor don't show much change in admissions at all.
The researchers suspect this trend may point to an underlying challenge for the poor: Food stamps, given out in a lump sum at the start of each month, run out for many families before they reach the end of it.
Where grocery stores in poor neighborhoods often report a rise in business when food stamps are electronically debited, hospitals may see the result when they run out.
That paper, led by Hilary Seligman, is one of several relatively new studies suggesting that the level of food assistance we currently give families — the average family of three gets $374 a month — isn't enough for a month's worth of meals.
A new report from the White House Council of Economic Advisors corralling this research shows that the short-term effects show up in some surprising ways. Amid the well-documented long-term effects of food stamps in alleviating hunger and easing poverty, week to week it looks as if the food stamp cycle may also influence hospital admissions, student test scores and even childhood behavior.

My goodness, an actual constructive suggestion on FR regarding food stamps rather than drooling polemics. Congratulations. Sounds like an idea with merit that would take some time to implement.

A friend of mine recently had her property management company sued by residents who complained that rent due dates needed to coincide with their government handout check dates.
The leeches won the case, the court ruling they couldn’t be expected to budget their free money. So now her company has to process rent every 2 weeks or so, the day after the government checks arrive. The irony is that half don’t pay rent anyway, but can’t be evicted due to NJ laws.

Our family of 4, PLUS three dogs, do not spend $374 a month, and we pay in cash. How many of them are “buying” name brand items? How much of it is absolute junk?
If you’re the Freeper I remember posting about her husband dying suddenly, it’s great to hear from you. I really felt for you and you were in my prayers for a couple days. It’s great to know you’re doing okay. It will get even better, and THAT’S A PROMISE!
One of my deceased husband’s messages to me was to look around and see what was actually better now that he was gone. It is quite interesting to contemplate and a good way to change my focus. For one thing, the house is a LOT quieter. Men are so noisy, have you noticed? ; - )
She told me that 90% of those cases were borderline, at best. Two-thirds of those were interested in nothing more than keeping the government checks coming. She said most of the 90% of the kids would make remarkable progress if the family didn't have all the latest X-Box, Play Station and multiple big screen television sets blaring in every room of the house. These were to a border line autistic kid like an open bar is to an alcoholic.
A tiny handful of families actually listened to her advice, put the electronics away and took the kid to the park to play frisbee toss, wiffleball or something else not involving excessive electronic stimulation. They were amazed by the results.

I can take no credit for this, I heard it years ago, probably here on FR, or maybe even from my college days (there was guy up in Caldwell, Idaho, where I went to college, who owned a billboard near an on-ramp to I-84, and he'd post things like this, too). Another is that it's supposed to be a temporary hand-up, not a multi-generational lifestyle.
it could be programmed like that and the government will claim that it makes it incredibly expensive. If a government worker has to take a new way into work our taxes go up.
Starchy foods are cheaper. Eating much in the way of starchy foods in the absence of more expensive vegetables and meats tends to produce lethargy and a sugar that is converted to fat.
That last one is too many syllables for the liberal snowflakes our universities are churning out. But “A Safety Net, Not a Hammock” is my new favorite saying. I must spread this!
My brother works 12 hr. shifts 6:00pm-6:00am and sometimes up in the night he will run to the local convenient store to get some snacks for his crew. One night on the 31st of the month it was around 11:45pm and he went on a snack run and noticed cars lined up around the bank building and convenient store parking lot full of cars. He asked the clerk what is going one with all these people in the lots this time of night?
The clerk just shook her head in disgust, they are waiting for midnight and their government SSI checks and EBT’s cards to hit and then they overwhelm the ATM’s and head to walmart and the stores.

Central Planners would love this idea- Food Stamps should only buy foods linked to a healthy diet.
