IT HAS been a bloody year in Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city. On November 14th the police department reported the city’s 300th homicide in 2015, a total not seen since 1999. The surge in killings in the majority-black city of roughly 623,000 began after the death on April 19th of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who was fatally injured while in police custody. Since Mr Gray’s death the city has recorded 244 homicides, a 78% increase over the same period in 2014, representing more than 100 additional deaths (see chart). Criminologists and city officials disagree as to the causes. Some say police have deliberately pulled back from poor, black neighbourhoods, a theory that the police disputes. Others blame an influx of drugs from pharmacies looted during the April riots.

Rawlings-Blake has a budding national profile, as secretary of the Democratic National Committee and vice president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. She is considering a run for the U.S. Senate to succeed retiring Democrat Barbara Mikulski, saying it is important for Baltimore to have continued political strength. Rawlings-Blake has also been mentioned as a possible candidate for Maryland governor in 2018.

I can remember when Camden,NJ was a beautiful little city. Its the same story over and over and over....
Same here; I’m close to Newark & Jersey City here in NJ, and it is sad how unprepared so many “urban youth” are for even the simplest of jobs. They are practically out of fast food altogether (replaced by Hispanics, over whom they don’t even have a language edge), and when they work in retail the turnover is high.
Many instead simply opt for the deal with the Devil offered by the left: In return for additional “clients” of government services (children), we will provide free housing, food stamps/WIC/SNAP, a cell phone, and a free college education. Those children are the sacrifices to Mammon, we read about them being killed every day.

Well, if there is any independent thought left in the Baltimore City Police, then God bless them and keep them. But I’ll bet anyone who doesn’t fit into the political culture gets hounded until they leave.
Of course it’s also the mother’s fault for having 5 kids by 5 different fathers. The mothers I work with do love their children, but they’re overwhelmed and fed up. We try to reconnect them emotionally with their adolescents, along with helping the kids have a vision for their future. It’s really hard, though, because the pull of the streets, the lure of quick money dealing drugs, no father, the parents themselves who were in the gang - it’s a huge challenge. But the mothers I work with do love their kids - they just can’t provide the discipline that a father would. The kids who do have fathers (even if they’re not living in the home) or male mentors seem to do better.
Maryland is saner that the Left Coast.

Yes, often that’s also true. The mother’s I work with may not have had a childhood themselves, or ran the streets because they didn’t have good parenting. But it’s got to end somewhere. I see some mothers unwilling to try because they’re overwhelmed, and others who fight like hell to overcome all kinds of obstacles to get their kids out of the streets. It’s really multifactorial, which is why the type of therapy I do tries to address all of the dimensions of the problem.
