Is nonconformity and freethinking a mental illness? According to the newest addition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it certainly is. The manual identifies a new mental illness called “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. Defined as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed.

Ironically, though, it is usually lefty types that love calling themselves “nonconformists” and “free thinkers”, just because they oppose the ideals of traditional society.

Yeah, really. DSM IV?

I was just reading an outstanding book today - Infectious Madness: The Surprising Science of How We "Catch" Mental Illness which was published in Oct 2015 and it distinctly said that they were up to DSM 5 and had dropped the Roman numerals. This must be an old article.

so... a republican gets elected and the average democrat can be defined as ‘mentally ill’ ... and as such, they would not be allowed to have any abortions, as they are not in ‘the right frame of mind’

oh, i realize the point is to classify all republicans and conservatives as ‘mentally ill’, thereby restricting their ability to exercise their 2nd amendment rights... but the show can be worn on the other foot, occasionally

I have a niece who was diagnosed with ODD and made her parents’ lives a living hell. My hubby and I just thought she was a spoiled brat who needed discipline.

Sounds like your average teenager to me!

The practitioner is familiar with the "average teenager" (may have his or her own) and with what constitutes behavior in the frequency or intensity to merit the diagnosis. Symptoms similar to those of many clinical disorders are common in non mentally ill people but not to that degree.

Brought to you by those who refused to conform to a decent and moralistic society and have finally managed to taint it so bad that conformity to them is conformity to the Evil One....
