Report in UK news said they were supposed to rendezvous with a Navy supply ship to refuel, Never made the hookup, and one boat ran out of fuel.

One was in trouble & the other one came to assist. The questions would be how long was the disabled boat D.I.W. before helped arrived? How far away was the other boat? Several minutes or several hours? It sounds like the boat had a mechanical issue. Navigational equipment is useless if you can't get underway except to give help your location. Perhaps the radio communication to the other boat or their base was heard and the Iranian's moved in seeing opportunity.

I was working on a boat one afternoon and started smelling something that was burning my eyes. I popped the opening to the battery compartment and they acid was coming out of the top of the batteries. The Voltage Regulator had stuck and we had to shut the boat down and wait for a tow. Running it risked explosion. Now granted it wasn't a patrol boat I was on but it was a Navy Utility Boat used for transporting up to 175 men.
