After months of playing nice, Cruz hits Trump. Then hits him again. And again.

After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them, Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday with a stream of pointed criticism directed at the GOP front-runner.

At events in New Hampshire and in radio interviews, Cruz took direct aim at Trump on several fronts: tying the billionaire to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, questioning his ability to win a general election, casting doubt on his ability to serve as commander in chief and disputing his "New York values."

The swiftness and ferocity of the attacks is striking for Cruz, who said as recently as Monday that he didn't want to go to war with Trump. The two men are battling for the top spot in polls in Iowa, which host the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 1. Cruz said Tuesday that Trump was clearly feeling the pressure.

Cruz took direct aim at Trump's competence. "Does a potential commander in chief know what the nuclear triad is, much less is he or she prepared and able to strengthen it and keep this country safe?" Cruz asked on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." In a Republican debate last month, Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation.

And he jabbed Trump on the billionaire's cosmopolitan lifestyle. “I think he may shift in his new rallies to playing New York, New York, because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,” Cruz told Carr.

Liberals love to stand in icy conditions for the fun of listening to Trump bash Obama/GOP while surrounded by amped up Trump fans?

My problem with Senator Ted Cruz is that he does not follow this admonition from Christ:

[5] And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. [6] But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee. [7] And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard. [8] Be not you therefore like to them, for your Father knoweth what is needful for you, before you ask him. ... - Matthew, Ch 6 (Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible)

Rather, Cruz like to be seen praying in public, making a big show of it - and this one thing causes me more doubt about him than any other issue.

So I’m guessing Cruz has no interest in convincing people from NY to vote for him.

The Debate will be a cat fight—gone nuclear. They should stick to the issues and not go personal—but they will. This might be the end of Trump but also, the end of Cruz too. Sad really. The only real losers—the American People.

“Really. When’s the last time the South voted for a New York Yankee? or the West?”

Trump is leading in virtually all of the southern states that have been polled. Where have you been?

I have the same gut feeling, although I cannot well express it in words - but there is something that just gnaws at me, something is odd about him ... That said, if Cruz were to win the nomination, I’d vote for him - but I’d still have misgivings.

Norm,

I understand that thinking. I voted for all those twerps. I hoped the next guy would be better. And I always voted in the primaries, generally for of the more conservative candidates.

But trump? He was a flaming liberal until recently! And I’m not sure he’s prolife. There is a clip of an interview from the January, 2015, Iowa Freedom Summit, where he’s questioned about his prolife position. He says over and over that he’s prolife. He spells out his exception: life of b the mother, rape, and incest. I don’t agree with his exceptions, but they’re pretty standard fare. But look up the interview on Google. Watch it and tell me what you see.

How can I vote for THAT?

Yes. There’s that. I also suspect that a president Cruz would say “look, I tried. Congress wouldn’t let me” to many issues...a wall perhaps.

“So I’m guessing Cruz has no interest in convincing people from NY to vote for him.”

Saying what he said leaves him extremely vulnerable, even outside of NYC in places that he actually wants to win.

A good strategist for another candidate would immediately cut him off from invoking 9-11 by letting him know that “new york values” was what held that city together after it, and inspired the entire nation.

While WE may get what he is saying, it was a horrible delivery.

Oh I understand it. Up until Romney I shared it. But in light of all we learned SINCE Romney regarding the GOP and Liberal Republicans, anyone that wants more of it simply wants liberalism. It has been there in the open for all to see and pretending anymore isn’t optional.

Cruz knows nothing about NY politics or NY “values”. What in the hell is he talking about. The state of NY is like every other big state in the country. Liberal in the big cities and conservative in the rest of the state. I lived in upstate NY for years, and let me tell you it was as conservative as can be. If you didn’t know you were in NY State you would have thought you were in hills of West Virginia. Nothing but country bars and pickup trucks and beer drinking rednecks that despise democrats. So Ted needs to know what he’s talking about before he goes spouting off. He’s making a fatal mistake running his mouth about Trump. Trump has been nice to him, other than saying he needs clear up the birth issue. Which he does.

Since when does free trade mean running up insane trade imbalances as the norm of doing business? I call that one-sided trade - and that’s putting it in a way that does not get me banned from FR.
