No Movement That Embraces Trump Can Call Itself Conservative
National Review ^ | September 5, 2015 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 01/15/2016 9:09:41 PM PST by TBP

I’m at a total loss to understand why serious pro-lifers take him at his word. He’s been all over the place on Planned Parenthood, and when asked who he’d like to put on the Supreme Court, he named his pro-choice-extremist sister.

[I]n the last month, Trump has contemplated a flat tax, the fair tax, maintaining the current progressive tax system, a carried-interest tax, a wealth tax, and doing nothing. His fans respond, “That shows he’s a pragmatist!”

No. It shows that he has absolutely no ideological guardrails whatsoever. Ronald Reagan once said, “Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.” Trump is close to the reverse. He’s a mouth at the wrong end of an alimentary canal spewing crap with no sense of responsibility.

In his embarrassing interview with Hugh Hewitt Thursday night, Trump revealed he knows less than most halfway-decent D.C. interns about foreign policy. Twitter lit up with responses about how it doesn’t matter and how it was a gotcha interview. They think that Trump’s claim that he’ll just go find a Douglas MacArthur to fix the problem is brilliant. Well, I’m all in favor of finding a Douglas MacArthur, but if you don’t know anything about foreign policy, the interview process will be a complete disaster. Yes, Reagan delegated. But he knew enough to know to whom to delegate.

[F]or the last five years no issue has united the Right more than opposition to Obamacare. Opposition to socialized medicine in general has been a core tenet of American conservatism from Day One. Yet, when Republicans were told that Donald Trump favors single-payer health care, support for single-payer health care jumped from 16 percent to 44 percent.

I get a kick out of many who proclaim Trump is not a conservative. So why are these people powerless to elect a ^true conservative^ as president? Because none of those so called ^good^ conservatives RESONATE with majority of people. Why do you think Cruz is behind Trump by double digits in most polls? Only a former democrat, divorced, and with Hollywood background and transformed conservative such as Ronald Reagan can RESONATE with voters.

What exactly have the ^true conservatives^ in congress accomplished?

Obamacare scrapped?
Illegals deported?
Wall built?
Anchor babies outlawed?
National debt reduced?
Abortion restricted?
China trade deficit reduced?
Food stamp growth curbed?
Welfare growth reduced?
Fraud in Medicare & Social Security under control? (25% of Medicare payments go to fraudulent claims, and there are tens of thousands of people over age 110 still getting social security checks automatically)

If Trump can deliver any 3 of above, he is more than enough conservative for most rational people.

Trump is conservative on these issues:

Pro life since at least 2011, wanted to ban partial birth abortion as far back as 2000.
Pro Traditional marriage. ^Gay rights is not my thing.^
Pro capital punishment ^Capital punishment isn't uncivilized; murderers living is^
Hold Judges accountable
Opposes ^Common core is a disaster^ Teach citizenship, quit ^dumbing down^.
Anti education unions (2000)
For school choice
^Climate Change is a hoax^
^No Cap-and-Tax^
For drilling our own.
On Environment ^Good development enhances the environment^
Stressed the importance of a strong family & culture of life (2015)
Supports Israel
Opposes Iran deal and letting Iran obtain the bomb.
Wants to crush ISIS quickly.
Wants a military so strong no one will challenge us.
Against unbalanced trade deals that kill American jobs.
Against warrant-less government surveillance of citizens.
Is against having a high national debt. Warns that $24T is a point of no return.
Against gun control
For assault weapon ban but says the AR-15 shouldn't be considered an assault weapon.
Wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with market driven polices and increased competition among insurance companies.
Wants to increase military spending.
Will close the border to illegals
Will send the criminals and sponges back.
Will deport all illegals but will let the hard working ones go through the legal process to come back.
Against Anchor babies
Knows unemployment is much higher than official stats.
Will bring jobs back through better trade negotiation.
Attended military academy and Wharton Business School.
Stood up for Birthers and challenged Obama on his fraud.
Believes USA is ^the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known^
Wants to honor commitments on Social Security and Medicare, which we can afford to do if he gets the economy going full steam.
Wants to reduce the fraud in disability and other programs.
Against marriage penalties in tax code.
Wants to simplify tax code with just 3 simple brackets.
Wants to reduce income taxes and reduce corporate tax.
Wants to rebuild our infrastructure.
Wants to apply welfare-to-work to 76 other welfare programs (2011)
Doesn't have time for political correctness.
Not afraid to call out either party or both when they are wrong.
Not a puppet to rich campaign donors. Go Trump 2016! Born in America of two US Citizen Parents! A true Natural Born Citizen!

Populism isn’t conservatism.

Just because people are for something, doesn’t make it right.

Trump embodies a current in our politics that isn’t conservative.

Vote for him if you like but don’t do it because you think he would advance a conservative agenda.

I asked the late Larry McDonald in 1982 his opinion of two political icons, George Wallace and Barry Goldwater.

He responded that Wallace probably never was a conservative true-believer but gravitated to certain conservative positions as a populist.

The he said, “Goldwater ought to just go ahead and die before he violates every principle any of us ever thought he believed in.”

Even Goldwater went wishy washy before leaving the Senate.

National Screw, well, that is because the Trump phenomenon is outside the paradigm of trying to find the most conservative guy and rah rah for him all the way to Nov 2016 when he loses.

It’s no longer about jersey colors and our side of the aisle. WE DONT HAVE A BLEEPING SIDE OF THE AISLE ANY MORE.

We have a two party kingdom. And the media including you, National Screw, are part of it. And Trump is against all of you, and he’s independently powerful, so it’s a hope for us.

Two old articles back-to-back. This one from September 5, 2015.

Regurgitating oldies.

“Digging up a five month old article to find a Trump hit piece is just pathetic.”

Is that not the truth.

What is with you Cruz trolls and posting old articles as current news?

The Cruznadians want to be this slow to make their guy look like speedy gonzales on crack. Cruz needed half a day to formulate a response to Trump's defense of New York.

In what fantasy world could anyone advance a conservative agenda with the politburo in DC the way it is? Especially from inside this corrupt system?

Some of us feel Trump is the best choice. You can be principled and pragmatic. The two aren’t mutually exclusive of each other.

Politics follows a contiguous line. You can’t get from far left to far right without going through some middle ground or large pools of blood.

Sorry, I stand with conservatism and the Constitution. I guess that must make me GOPe, huh?

I guess so, according to some experts here. But I obviously don't agree with that, any more than I agree that everyone who likes Mozart is a Nazi as many decried after WWII.

Supporting a liar like Trump s even more pathetic.

“know the Democrats are going to be bringing a suit. You have a big lawsuit over your head while you’re running, and if you become the nominee, who the hell knows if you can even serve in office?” Trump said during Thursday night’s debate. “So you should go out, get a declaratory judgment, let the courts decide.””

Trump is a liberal rat. He will not do what he purports to be for.

Just like Obama claimed he was against Bush’s deficits. Then he tripled them.

Trump will go back to hus liberal walk once he us in.

You can be principled and pragmatic

I tried that once...I tried it twice...I tried it again!

It did not work very well, did it...

The answer is no, you cannot be principled and pragmatic simultaneously.

I’ve enjoyed the Trump ride and the angst that he has caused to the dreaded GOP-e. But I’m not comfortable with him as our nominee. I’ve been burned too many times. I just want a proven conservative

Trump is not a proven Conservative and will confirm any fears you have about him if he becomes the nominee.
