Dangerous Winter Storm Jonas to Bring Crippling Snowstorm, Major Ice Threat; Blizzard Warnings
The Weather Channel ^ | January 21, 2016 | Weather.com

Posted on 01/21/2016 9:56:06 AM PST by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

Blizzard warnings have been issued for the Baltimore and Washington D.C. metro areas, and blizzard watches extend northward to the Philadelphia and New York City metro areas as Winter Storm Jonas begins to take shape. The storm is expected to deliver heavy snowfall to at least 15 states, and heavy ice accumulations, strong winds and coastal flooding will add to the storm's impact as it carves a path from the nation's heartland through the South and onward to the East Coast now through Sunday.

As of Thursday morning, just over 73 million people – or roughly one in every four Americans – were covered by either a blizzard watch, blizzard warning, winter storm watch, winter storm warning, winter weather advisory, or freezing rain advisory from southeast Nebraska to the Carolinas to the New York City area.

JRandomFreeper (Johnny) will likely not live through today.

Wow, that's some bad news. I have thoroughly enjoyed his posts over the last fifteen years or so. I always thought he leads an enviable lifestyle. Prayers up.

So we went to March for Life in DC. The march went off without a hitch. It started snowing just as we got done.

No issues and no danger. It’s now 6:30 pm. We got home around 5. Less than an inch of snow.

I feel bad for folks who get so paralyzed by the weather.

No doubt the blizzard will worsen by tomorrow but today, as predicted was just fine.

I have had to go out into the teeth of such a few times when relatives didn’t plan too well. I am always glad to hear that all are home and safe.

OL, no I am very much under the radar. We blend in around here, and have purposely bought an older home and don’t look like we have much or work too hard. I do vacillate between warning folks to have more than 3 days of supplies and pretending that’s all I have too. I’ve stuck with with The latter.

LOL I was kidding..I figured you would be under radar ;)

You can’t live through a blizzard without French Toast lots and lots of french toast. Yet the funny thing is they always seem to forget the syrup!

French Toast...So that is why the bread shelves in stores are always first to empty?!

I’m getting old and forgetful.

I was just looking to see if there was a thread on the storm, having totally forgotten that I’d found one and posted to it earlier. How embarrassing.

But I’m operating on about four hours of sleep per night this past week for some reason.

Tonight I’m staying up in case I have to unass the house in a hurry. Just putting together a bugout bag.

Only an inch or so of snow on the ground here east of DC. Snow is coming down steady but not heavy. Wind is picking up a bit, just enough to make the snow a little off vertical.

Now saying even New York City will get up to 2 feet. Will be a top 5 storm for that city. DC getting buried. Over a foot already and on the way to two feet.

Just in case it was not clear to some, the idea is to freeze the gallon of water in the freezer and then if the electricity goes out, transfer it to the refrigerator area to maintain cool.

When my husband developed Alzheimers he wanted to die at home not in a hospital. So I built up a supply of about 3 months food in case I couldn’t go out much to shop. Came in handy, I still rotate it and could probably survive 3 months on what I have.

For those who don’t follow this stuff, that is a map of ash fields from 4 different volcanic eruptions. Three are from Yellowstone, and one is from Long Valley, CA.

Not to mention DC area drivers are frequently from the south with no snow driving experience. Many years ago my late husband had a scholarship at a DC university. It was snowing, and almost no one was there. He went to the cafeteria and joined a table with 5 or 6 other people. The only people in the room. They started chatting. “Where are you from?” Oh, I’m from Michigan. I’m from Alaska. I’m from Iowa. I’m from Maine, etc. He was laughing about it when he got home. Now I’m only from New Jersey. But I was 10 years old when the “Big Snow of ‘47” hit. I can remember wading through snow up to my chest. When my father dug out the path to the street, we measured the snow as 27 inches deep, and I dug a cave in the wall for my 2 year old brother.

Just got up. When I opened the front door to look out the snow decided it wanted to drift into my living room so I nixed that idea. Plenty of snow outside here (East of DC just past the Beltway). Nobody with any sense should be out in this mess. Sympathies to anyone still trying to get home from yesterday evening.

I’m retired so I don’t have any reason to leave the house until I run out of food.

Here is some fairly detailed information on events and conditions throughout the blizzard area. For example high water at Lewes, Deleware just under the record of the Ash Wednesday storm and a gust of 70mph.
