Mountain biker Damian Hiley was hours into a Saturday ride on a West Sycamore Canyon trail in Scripps Ranch — one he’s been excited to try out for some time — when he and his cycling group came upon a man standing in the middle of the trail, a gun at his hip.

Hiley’s group had no choice but to hike more than two miles back to their cars - in cycling shoes.
Their bikes were confiscated and they will be fined - their claim is they didn’t see any signs to stop them, despite warnings from bike groups and the Marines. Being bikers, they do not mind cycling through or near live fire exercises since they are immortal and liberals making them immune to such things.
Why aren’t the marines on the border stopping criminals and drugs from entering the country rather than stealing bikes from Americans?
I can understand turning folks around, and explaining the situation. Better signage would work, too. What I don’t understand is confiscating bicycles. Do they confiscate backpacks of hikers? That’s their gear. How do they get away with taking the bikes?
Jeez, can you imagine the uproar if one of these lycra-clad hipsters catches a stray round because they’re cycling where they shouldn’t be?
You want to hike or bike on a Marine trail on a Marine base?
Then join the Marines.
Actually, I can give many examples of where military bases have preserved their land to such a excellent extent that liberal hate-everything-military types want to turn them into nature reserves because everything around the bases has been developed.
Because today's' liberal youth nothing-is-my-fault would just keep ignoring them and trespass over and over again.
A) because there are not enough of them;
B) because it is not their mission;
C) because that is the job of the Border Patrol and DHS;
D) if they were they would not be permitted to carry more that a side arm and one five-six round clip;
E) because Obie wan kenobe would not permit it;
F) because no one other than cyclists and their friends care about cyclists. Many consider them an arrogant lot.
Heavy handed BS. If it was so deadly of an area that they couldn’t ride a mountain bike down the trail, then after citing them and taking the bikes, they wouldn’t have cut them loose to -walk through- the same area for two miles.
They would have transported them to the gate after citing them.
Bikers should have faked cooperating for a moment, and then suddenly fled on the bikes. They wouldn’t be shot, and all they are risking is an additional misdemeanor eluding charge. A fast ride for all the marbles.
Now the Feds have gone and done it.
It wasn’t a problem upsetting the ranchers with their extensive Western land holdings and heavy handed methods, but now they’ve upset the cycling crowd! Watch out!!
My ears would grow flaps and I wouldn’t hear any uproar. Go Marines! Make a special trail that cyclists have to sign wavers for ... just don’t make the trails through the rotary gun or arty ranges, give them a sporting chance.
People have been riding and playing in those canyons for at least 3 decades. Hasn’t happened yet. But the security state is new and fun. Zee rules must be followed.
Besides, the guy who decided to be a prick in enforcing this could have been a homo in this day and age.

Border work -has indeed- been done by them before. They have also protected mail trains. They are also not a hurricane and earthquake relief force.
Presidents force in readiness, not part of the Posse Comitatus act and can be used in many ways.

No. Its the same side arm that the National Guard troops briefly stationed on the border were permitted ... not being a gun person I don’t know the brand.
Because the Obama administration won’t let them apprehend illegals anymore than it will let the Border Patrol apprehend them. Just BEING downrange from a live-fire range is pretty stupid.
