An electronic cigarette exploded in a 15-year-old Windsor boy’s mouth, causing him to lose about a half-dozen teeth, police and fire officials said.
The explosion sent hot shards of the device scattering, with some still hot like embers on the floor when firefighters arrived after a 911 call came in just after 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at a home on Summer Rain Drive off Los Amigos Road, said Cyndi Foreman, a fire prevention specialist with the Central Fire Authority of Sonoma County.
“His teeth literally fell out with braces on them,†Foreman said. “He had lacerations to his lip and tongue. It literally exploded in his mouth.â€
The boy was taken to Kaiser Medical Center in Santa Rosa and released with a referral to an oral surgeon, Foreman said. The boy told paramedics that the so-called “vape pen†had been modified, Foreman said. She did not have details about how it had been modified.

I’ve heard that kids are modifying e-cigs to vaporize cannabis oil or other drugs. I wonder if it was that sort of mod, and how that might have led to an explosion.
It was likely the cheap lithium battery that exploded. They will go into thermal runaway, overheat, and outgas , burst into flames, or explode.
Before, it was the old exploding cigar trick.

Did some one put the equivalent of a exploding shard in evap- similar to the gag shards used in vintage cigarettes and cigars

All dangerous shrapnel was safely contained, clearly a responsible amateur scientist. :)
There has been a really bad tendency among teenagers and young adults to "tweak" ecigs to vape clouds like WW2 smokescreen destroyers... This involves ignorantly raising the voltage at which the devices are designed to work.
Ignorant stupidity like that carries its own reward...
So much for "cool" and "with it..."
At a recent business Christmas party there was one such moron, and I just made sure my friends an I stayed as far away as possible from the idiot.
It is likely that whatever custom mod that was done by this kid of one of his friends, is the reason it exploded. Most likely whatever they did shorted out the lithium battery and it exploded.
Seen such this way too.

Is he invited to the White House? Surely nearly fatally modifying the device is more inventive than disassembling a clock.
Not likely. They don't mod them for drugs. Mods aren't required for cannabis oil. They mod them for longer battery charges and for greater "smoke" output.
I see a lot of younger guys in the Navy doing this. They're also making their own "home-brew" oils to vape.
