This Is the Jeff Sessions Election and the GOP Is Just Along for the Ride

To be candid, there’s not usually a line of reporters waiting to talk to Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL).

But last week, with only four days to go until the Iowa caucuses, the 69-year-old glassy-eyed former U.S. attorney nearly forgot to cast his vote on a routine matter he was so busy moving from one interview to the next outside of the Senate chamber.

The four-term senator is hardly a new face in the Republican Party, nor is the soft-spoken and twangy Sessions considered the party’s rising star. But suddenly, almost out of nowhere, and for reasons even he doesn’t fully grasp, Sessions has become a talisman for GOP presidential candidates. Association with him and his hardline on immigration, with its nativist echoes, confers instant credibility in a presidential campaign defined by Donald Trump’s appeals to an anxious electorate’s baser instincts.

If Sessions was a mostly lonely figure on the far-right fringe of previous immigration debates, he is now at the fractious center of the most virulent debate on immigration the country has seen in decades, with Hispanic immigrants, Syrian refugees, and even foreign doctors, engineers, and Ph.Ds among those coming under withering scorn. Sessions hasn't budged; rather the GOP has come to him.

Sessions has spent most of his tenure in the Senate trying to limit even some legal forms of immigration to the United States, railing against many moderate Republican or business-backed efforts to soften the GOP’s record with Latino voters as the party desperately grappled to expand its base.

“Good fences make good neighbors,” he said in 2006 before he went toe-to-toe with his own party’s President against an immigration reform reform bill.

Thank God for Jeff Sessions. We close the borders or we die. It’s as simple as that.

Worse? It would be hard to do better. I don’t care who he endorses or doesn’t endorse. Sessions is one man who will do what he thinks is best for the USA.

Who?

(I barely know Jeff Sessions. He seems like a decent guy, but a “Jeff Sessions Election”? That’s plain nuts....)

My favorite Senator. Sessions is the only one I trust. He is so good that the Dems in his state dId not even run an opponent against him in the last election.

Jeff Sessions isn’t a household name, but if Trump is elected, he will be. He’s the best voice in the Senate on immigration and trade issues, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trump pick him as a VP candidate or some high-level cabinet position.

I love Sessions

He’s our most senior reliable senator

But you’re right it’s not his election

It’s The Anti Establishment election no question

The two twofrontrunners prove that well enough

God bless Jeff Sessions. He speaks for most Americans. The problem is the political class isn’t listening.

If Trump wins, it is a win for Jeff Sessions. He provided the template for victory almost two years ago. It should be required reading for every Rep candidate at every level. Only Trump is using the template and it is doing exactly what Sessions said it would do. A brilliant piece to save the country and the GOP. Read it all and enjoy.

Amen.

The Establishment is barely cluing in to the fact that this election is about repudiating THEM!

The WSJ has lost its collective mind, for example.

I wonder also if they would print the same article today. NR jumped the shark when it went after Trump. They are open border “conservatives” controlled by their corporate paymasters.

I used to wait eagerly for my NR to come in the mail. After WFB retired and especially after he died it was depressing to watch it turn into a something much less than it had been.

Those lives at risk have already been neutralized, either by the enemies or by our guys bringing them back. The enemy already knows who they are. Why the secrecy now? Mrs. Bill and Mr. Bill already sold all that info.

Of course, if he endorses Donald Trump, there will be four or five years of vilification of the man, right here on FR.
