The recent spate of shootings in this city has a lot of people asking why it's happening and how concerned we should be about our safety.
After two people were killed and three more injured in Chinatown early Sunday morning, those questions are being asked more and more. The shooting happened on Spadina near Nassau Street, when a gunman opened fire on a group of men outside a restaurant.
It's the ninth homicide in the city this year. Eight of those killings involved firearms. That brings the number of shootings up by about 100 per cent over this month last year.

I thought Canada had strict gun control laws. How is this possible. They should make it illegal.
It would have been illuminating if the article discussed who was killed and who did the killing.
It briefly mentions that the police stopped doing street checks then veers off into speculation about the weather.
And, of course, Toronto’s changing demographics have NOTHING to do with it.
As a former canuckistani, it’s more “demographic’ than Vancouver Bc where I’m from. There’s a reason why vancouver has been called Hongcouver and Toronto is Torontistan.

It’s the Trudeau Affect
Climate change and gun violence.
Why didn’t I think of that?
I have shot more animals in the fall and winter than the summer.
Perhaps there is a link.
I think justine true-doh may have been at the mosque on his knees at the time.
Caused by Global Change?
The weather doesn’t shoot anyone. Humans do. Do they get encouragement from the new liberal prime minister?
Might check with those in the Far East!

How about immigration and demographics to blame?
I wish we could figure out what causes guns in certain areas to run around and start getting violent.
It’s a mystery.
hmmmm.....let’s see.....is it Open Borders Immigration?
Or GLOBAL WARMING combined with EEEEEEVIL American gun laws next door??
And on the same day, there is this FR headline:
New Orleans Legal Gun Carrier Stops Mass Shooting
Think Justin will be able to connect the dots? Me neither.
Unless someone’s grandma was murdered by a cumulus cloud, this entire line of reasoning is ludicrous.
Seriously, a group of men outside a restaurant taking fire from an unknown assailant? That isn't exactly a crime of passion, and it isn't generic "gun violence". Criminal or political, take your pick.
Par for the course for Canadians like myself when the main stream media reports these things. The first order of the usual reports will quickly state the racial background - if white. When the racial background is studiously avoided, the chances are that the perpetrator is black. A high ranking police chief in Ontario was castigated as a "racist" for putting out demographics of criminal violence. He soon backed off.
From what I have seen elsewhere, the victims were black. A black man is sought as the shooter. Desperate pleas for citizens who were taking videos are made. Toronto's extravaganza called "The Carribeana "occurs every year to much fanfare and apparent boosts to the economy.
The downside of a large and collective "community" that spawns criminal activity is one that does not get much mention.
