Windham, New Hampshire (CNN)The day after winning the Iowa caucuses, Ted Cruz issued an apology to Republican rival Ben Carson for falsely telling Iowa caucusgoers that the retired neurosurgeon planned to quit the race, calling it a "mistake."

Cruz said in a statement Tuesday that his campaign staff saw a CNN report that Carson was dropping out, although CNN had not characterized Carson's actions that way.

"Last night when our political team saw the CNN post saying that Dr. Carson was not carrying on to New Hampshire and South Carolina, our campaign updated grassroots leaders just as we would with any breaking news story," Cruz said in a statement first shared with CNN. "That's fair game. What the team then should have done was send around the follow-up statement from the Carson campaign clarifying that he was indeed staying in the race when that came out."

Like i just heard Tom Sullivan say,

Cruz’s campaign manager just went the opposite direction of Cruz’s apology. I wonder if Cruz will show some leadership and fire his campaign manager. Thats what counts. Leadership.

"Cruz seems to practice a Christian form of Taqiyya, that if you lie in the cause of Jesus, its Okey Dokey,"

There is no such thing and for you to equate Christians, any Christian with such an unbiblical premise is beyond the pale.

Cruz and his supporters have just illustrated a perfect example on why I’m not a Christian. Cruz is no better than the slimy televangelist who talks grandma out of her pension, then sadly shakes his head and says, ‘it’s G-d’s will,’ after his slimy lawyer beats grandma’s family in court.

It’s because of examples of “Christianity” exactly like this that I left the religion. Not just what Cruz and his team did, but the reaction of his ‘Christian’ supporters. “This is how politics is played!” (But you said that you were disgusted with politics as usual and wanted a return to ‘values’... liars.)

You don’t claim the moral high ground, then use low-life tactics. You don’t use G-d’s name in vain.

If Cruz was innocent, he should’ve been absolutely outraged. But he wasn’t. He smoothly played it off. He gave his half-apology because he is totally busted. All that mattered to him was that he ‘won’ by an extra delegate. Didn’t matter how.

He doesn’t care about right.

“I’m voting for a man who shares my values.” No. You’re voting for a man who *says* that he shares your values. He speaks your language and can talk you into anything.

This is *exactly* why I’m not voting for a ‘godly man’ for president. I no longer trust them.

I want an average man. I’ll take an honest sinner over a lying priest any day of the week.

I don’t think an apology was necessary for reporting a breaking news story but Senator Cruz is a class act.

I dont think Cruz apologized for forwarding the CNN/Carson breaking story.

I believe he apologized for not forwarding the CNN/Carson correction.

Went the opposite direction of Cruz’s apology? What does that mean? Cruz said they should have updated their people when Carson clarified that what CNN had reported was incorrect. By that time it was probably too late to reach their people, ‘cause it seems like Carson’s clarification must have been between 7:03 and 7:11pm, when the caucus was already underway.

Does his campaign manager say something else?

These threads are getting more humorous by the day. I was originally appalled at the behavior of FReepers for their behavior on the board.

Now? I’ve gained 5 pounds from all the popcorn. Got a joke. What do you call it when a candidate who is 15 points behind the third place candidate says he is skipping the next two primaries? Suspending the campaign. What do you call it when a news outlet that has it in for Republicans broadcasts it? A trap. And Cruz’s people fell into it.

“Stuff it”? Oh dear, I’m deeply, deeply offended! I’ve been stuffed by a Trump supporter; whatever will I DO?

Here’s a news flash for you: “Eight of the Republican presidential hopefuls, Trump, Cruz, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, John Kasich, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, and Jim Gilmore said in financial disclosures that were largely filed between June and August last year that they had owned Goldman funds or Goldman stock, and in some cases both. The disclosures mostly cover the period from the beginning of 2014 to the middle of last year.”

There’s a post from earlier today about this. Most commenters including myself are far more interested in knowing who the “unnamed GOP insider” sources are and which if any of the campaigns they’re associated with. The timing, just after some success in Iowa but early enough to sink in with voters in New Hampshire, is Democrat level hardball.

‘His supporters will say, just politics, get used to it. Oh, and if you complain you are whining. Only other candidates are held to truth and honesty.’

This was the Obama playbook. It worked for him bc Dems value winning above all else. Some of Cruz’ more honest supporters have echoed that sentiment. They just want Cruz to win, and for that the Golden Rule can be suspended.

It’s one thing to turn ethics on its head. But lying in the name of winning, while at the same time running as a great Christian? That is scary.

Yep, the smartest lawyer who ever lived didn’t even know until his 40s that being born in Canada gave him Canadian citizenship.

Everyone who believes that raise your hand.

Cruz is apologizing for the “Mistake” (his words).
His campaign manager is saying they did nothing wrong. They only posted what CNN posted first.

So why is cruz apologizing? Or did they do nothing wrong, which is what his campaign manager is saying.

I do. There was some story that came out about how Cruz was the second choice of voters who were into other candidates. Which I believe as evidenced by Carson voters breaking for Cruz last night.
I think after NH and possibly South Carolina, when the lower tier candidates drop out, Cruz will pick them up. And I don’t count out the possibility of Trump having a ‘Howard Dean moment”
