President Obama spoke warmly about Islam during his speech at a mosque today, highlighting the contributions that Muslims had made to the fabric of American society.
“Islam has always been part of America,†he said, detailing the beginnings of the religion among African slaves brought to America. He also pointed out that Thomas Jefferson included the “Mohammedan†as one of the religions that should be protected.

There’s a wonderful book by historian Barbara Tuchman, I think from the 1980s titled The First Salute, where she credits the Dutch, on an island in the Caribbean, for the first recognition of America. She also wrote a couple of Pulitzer Prize winners, like The Guns of August.
Maybe it’s not the same thing, but I detest the idea of giving muslims credit for anything to do with America.
In 1786, Jefferson and John Adams met with Tripolis ambassador to Great Britain to demand to know by what right the Muslim states could attack another nations ships and enslave the sailors.
It's well documented that Jefferson recorded the ambassadors response, in which he said that Islam was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Quran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.
Jefferson went to war against the Barbary Pirates in 1801 with a full understanding of what they were doing and why - he was not encumbered with political correctness or panty wastes at the time and took care of business.

THE FOUNDER OF CAIR HAS TOLD US PLAINLY OF ISLAM’S OBJECTIVE IN AMERICA:
“ISLAM ISN’T IN AMERICA TO BE EQUAL TO ANY OTHER FAITH, BUT TO BECOME DOMINANT. The Koran ... should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth. Everthing we need to know is in the Koran. We don’t need to look somewhere else.”
