Swedish telecom chief to steer web body ICANN to independence [USA Internet control expires Sept 30]

San Francisco (AFP) - Sweden's Goran Marby was Monday named head of the body that manages Internet addresses, pledging to uphold checks and balances as it steps out from under US government oversight.

Marby, director-general of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority, will take charge in May of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as the nonprofit transitions to become an independent non-governmental body.

While the transition will not change how the Internet works, it will help reassure users, businesses and governments about its integrity, according to supporters who see it as a symbolic move towards asserting the web's independence.

The multistakeholder model is intended to allow virtually all users, in the public and private sector, to participate in Internet governance -- as opposed to a "multilateral" system controlled by governments.

A transition plan being prepared since early 2014 is undergoing final touches before being delivered to the US government, and is on track for completion this year, ICANN says.

That’s the spirit! When you make something and it works well, change how it works and give it to someone else.

This is the end of free speech on the internet. Europe’s crumbling anyway and soon Islam will dominate Europe and the internet.

‘... The multistakeholder model is intended to allow virtually all users, in the public and private sector, to participate in Internet governance ...’

Hasn't Sweden been take over by Muzzies? Oh I can see a future where ISIS can bring the Internet to a crawl if their regularly scheduled compliance payments are not made.

To put it simply ...

A worldwide democratic oversight plan to initiate hate speech laws — at best. GOVERNENCE of what is permitted as opposed to Free Speech.

And the capital base of this? Sweden, where hate speech laws are destroying their society and endangering their public via muslim refugees.

To control the movement of information is to now control the concepts of freedom and liberty.

The elites are smiling and rubbing their hands together like Mr. Burns right now.

This is code speech for ‘hate speech’ laws regulated internationally and managed by the ultra-left Swedish government. [New tagline]

‘The multistakeholder model is intended to allow virtually all users, in the public and private sector, to participate in Internet governance — as opposed to a “multilateral” system controlled by governments.’

Does this affect free speech in the US?

I’m no expert on the subject but I just try to use my common sense. The Europeans have been socialists for decades and now don’t give a damn about their own people’s free speech when it affects the ruling class’s plans.

Will this governence of domain names enable them to delete web sites anywhere on earth or hand them to new owners?

For example, if this forum is ‘racist’ by saying the truth about muslim violence? So they hand it over to the PLO or Kosovo’s KLA?

I just studied this some more.

Europe is seeking to form of ‘internet ostracism’ to regulate ALL domain names [aka web addresses] throughout the world, and Obama is on board.

If McConnell really wants to hurt the Tea Party as badly as he claims, then this is the way to do it.

http://betanews.com/2016/01/24/the-clock-is-ticking-for-the-us-to-relinquish-control-of-icann/

It’s packed with empty assurances, but here’s the ‘meat’ ...

‘For decades, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) — the non-profit organization that manages IP addresses and domain names — has been overseen by the US Department of Commerce ... Most upset are those who point to the independent nature of the internet, and the need for any body with global power to be similarly indpendent. Later this year ICANN is set — at long last — to completely separate from the US government.

While this does hinge on US government approval, by the end of September, ICANN could instead be in the hands of businesses, individuals, and multiple global governments.

[The tacit concern is over US surveillance by the NSA etc. But how does control of domain names affect that?]

In February, Congress will hear plans for how the transition process could work. The current contract between ICANN and the government is due to expire on 30 September — unless there are governmental protests about how the handover could happen, this deadline should be allowed to naturally expire.

The new arrangement, announced back in March 2014, would introduce a great degree of diversity of oversight, although ICANN insists that despite the involvement of the US government, it has still been able to operate independently.

... Ultimately, this is little more than a common sense PR move that decentralizes control of the internet.

... a move to a more diverse structure should mean that it is better at self-policing and allows for far greater transparency and accountability ...

‘In February, Congress will hear plans for how the transition process could work.’

I would imagine that’s strictly senate oversight of Obama’s treaty powers.

ICANN — ‘NN’, control of ‘names and numbers’. Internet addresses. Does NOTHING to prevent snooping by the NSA.

So we allow these guys to govern the internet:

‘... could instead be in the hands of businesses, individuals, and multiple global governments ...’

— ‘Individuals’, such as voluntary online polls. In other words, Greek ostracism of anyone that the world is angry at in the heat of the moment.

— ‘Global governments’. Most of which are dominated by totalitarian regimes.
