Physician: Lifting DDT Ban Could Stop Mosquito-Borne Zika Virus
breitbart.com ^ | 2/10/2016 | Dr. Susan Berry

Posted on 02/10/2016 7:45:51 AM PST by rktman

The executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) asserts that a lifting of the ban on DDT could prevent the spread of the Zika virus, just as it could have wiped out malaria.

Dr. Jane Orient tells Breitbart News the major public health measure required to combat the Zika virus pandemic is mosquito control and says, "DDT was the most effective public health weapon of all time."

Orient continues:

The ban on DDT was basically the decision of one man, William Ruckelshaus, going against a mountain of evidence on safety and enormous health benefits. It was said that, "If they can ban DDT, they can ban anything." And that's how the EPA power grab started. Millions of African babies have died and are still dying of malaria because if it.

Probably the biggest enviro BS next to glow-bull climate discombobulation

This has been infinitely more disastrous. Several million people die needlessly each and every year because of the unilateral action of a single government agency official. The phony Global Warming hysteria has not caused any deaths, grueling or otherwise. Yes, several respectable scientists have lost their jobs, but the most serious injury has been to the wallets and purses of duped taxpayers.

The EPA can’t ban the insecticide for the entire world....(not that I should excuse the epa for anything)...if millions of African babies died of it, it was because the African nations banned the substance or couldn’t afford it!

Not surprising. They probably will have Lenin, Stalin and Mao schools eventually. Certainly they will have Muhammad schools.

Yep. The victims are mostly black. Their lives don’t matter.

Everybody put a bucket of water outside with some clorox in the water. Watch the larva die by the millions! All it takes is about 2 inches of water with 1 tbsp of clorox. You have to keep up with it though, because the clorox evaporates out after a few days.

Got a small water feature? Add some goldfish or mosquito fish. People who keep garden ponds know that their mosquito pests are much less than those who don’t because the fish eat the larva if the water isn’t moving much.

It’s small scale of course, but it saves a bunch of spraying, AND is effective. Every little bit helps.

“or couldn’t afford it!”

They could afford to buy it, but they can’t afford the infrastructure to make it.

Dry cleaners used to dust clothes with DDT; it was called moth proofing. The clothes got a little tag. My wife collects vintage military uniforms. If they are from the WWII era and they are in perfect condition... they often have the tag. We never get these uniforms cleaned. There is no equivalent protection from moths.

The only good thing about the DDT ban is that by now a lot of insects would probably have developed resistance to it. Because of the ban it is still as effective as it ever was. So along with being one of the safest insecticides ever developed it can still be used in very small quantities and be effective.

I had a chemistry professor in college who swore DDT was perfectly safe to humans and that it’s ban has been responsible for the deaths of millions.

When I was a kid we’d run or ride our bikes behind the DDT spraying truck. Couldn’t see in front of you more than a few feet. Ran into lots of parked cars. And I’ve live to be 64 so far.

The DDT ban is also responsible for the resurgence of bedbugs. There isn’t anything else that can effectively kill them.

I know it’s the UN and WHO and efforts worldwide. The EPA was used in this country. DDT was being widely used in Africa before the ban and Malaria was in decline. I believe DDT was primarily being funded for use in Africa by the UN (US) and WHO (US). I believe letting Malaria spread is population control.

Which might have been a side effect of a bird population suddenly starving for insects, not the chemical effects of the DDT on the egg shell. Insects are where birds get most of their dietary calcium.

Kind of hard to be the birds, but there could be other ameliorating measures like having special bird feeding in widespread DDT treated areas to compensate for the loss of insects.

“Do some even read?? DDT causes more frequent, and WORSE, birth defects. No. No DDT.”

Has never been documented.

There are people today who used to run around in the fog of the DDT trucks, they had kids, and those kids had kids. Where are the birth defects?

Count my my wife and I among those who ran around playing in the DDT Trucks. By the way, we had three health children and now have 4 healthy Brand-Children.
