Trump threatens to sue Cruz for 'not being a natural born citizen'

Donald Trump on Friday threatened to sue Ted Cruz for "not being a natural born citizen" if the Texas senator "doesn't clean up his act" and stop running negative ads against him.

"If @TedCruz doesn't clean up his act, stop cheating, & doing negative ads, I have standing to sue him for not being a natural born citizen," he tweeted.

If @TedCruz doesn't clean up his act, stop cheating, & doing negative ads, I have standing to sue him for not being a natural born citizen.

-- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 12, 2016

Trump has previously argued that if Cruz won the Republican nomination, Democrats would argue that the Canada-born Texas senator was ineligible for the presidency. Last month, Trump asked a rally if he should sue Cruz "just for fun" over the issue.

Losers in election contests have standing to challenge the outcome of the contest, if the challenge is based on fraud or eligibility. That’s universal, as far as I know. As of right now, Trump has not lost any election contest, caucuses being party affairs, and not state election affairs.

I have read that there is no basis for a lawsuit unless Cruz is actually elected President. In that case, I doubt the courts would intervene and reverse the will of the people.

Congress could probably do something about it, but it’s likely one or both Houses will remain in GOP hands, so that won’t go anywhere.

Trump’s just blowing smoke.

There’s too much at stake here for these two to be playing electioneering games.
_______________

I would say Trump agrees with you, that is why he’s calling bullsh*t.

the current polls in South Carolina has made the Cruz campaign desperate...his Super Pacs and campaign have gone to full “Say anything” mode.

“A vote for Trump is a vote for Obamacare”. False
“Trump bulldozed a little old ladies house”. False
Ted Cruz said “build the wall” before Trump. False (Its in Trump’s 2011 book)
The push polls were not done by Cruz Campaign. Half truth...done by Super Pac coordinated through Campaign manager

No, Trump just calls bullsh*t..that’s what Trump does. He thinks Cruz should stop the crap.

>>Oh Lord. Lady Gaga is fine

I mean, I am bisexual, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I don’t need to -– I’m sorry if this is a bit vulgar – but I don’t need to eat pussy in front of the whole world for people to take me seriously. You can believe it or not, it’s just here, I’m honest. I’m not saying it to be controversial; there you have it, here I am, take it or leave it. I know I am not just a lesbian –- I have a boyfriend –- but all of my friends are in this community.

Gaga has long been seen as an ally and supporter of the queer community

What's your definition of conservatism again?

Indeed, what exactly is the alternative to

A)Trump made it up (we all know it’s this one but let’s play along)

or

B)Trump is covering up the damning evidence he found.

?

He’s “waiting”? For what? For Obama’s term to expire? What was the point then?

Even if Trump loses the primary then how does he demonstrate the damage is due to Cruz being on the ballot as opposed to Kasich, Bush, Carson, or Rubio?

Cruz should say “Bring it on” but should also agree on what Trump must do if Cruz wins the suit. At the minimum, loser pays court costs and donates $5 million to the winner’s campaign.

“Trump threatens to sue Cruz for ‘not being a natural born citizen.”

Great. Sue. If you lose you drop from the race immediately and put all of your support behind Cruz.

Man up and put your big boy pants on.

You see this very clearly. It’s quite simple. One tweet and Trump’s adversaries are in a blind rage.

If Cruz is taking votes away from him and Cruz is not eligible, then Trump has suffered harm.

How?

Maybe ALL the candidates should bring a joint suit against Cruz, because they all have standing. I don’t think one candidate, Trump, should stick his neck out by suing. It will benefit Cruz if he can get a ruling his way...personally, and unfortunately, I think it will upset his applecart. But either way, a definitive ruling will be the best for the country prior to any chance of Cruz becoming the eventual nominee and a nightmare legal boondoggle ensuing. A lot of people may switch their vote to Cruz if they could be assured this was not hanging over his head.

You are of course missing the point. It’s not always about actually carrying through on a threat. Making the threat may still fulfill its purpose. By the way, Trump did sue Univision over a campaign related breach of contract. They recently settled out of court. I wouldn’t bet that Univision came out of it very well.

If Trump had any guts, he’d sue Obama.

I thought he sent all those private investigators to Hawaii in 2012 and was amazed at what they were finding? Whatever happened to that?
