Senior U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia found dead at West Texas ranch

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia's death.

"I was told it was this morning," Biery said of Scalia's death. "It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it's pretty vague right now as to how," he said. "My reaction is it's really unfortunate with any death. And now, politically, in the presidential cycle we're in my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected."

It would probably be up to the local authorities. There was a big controversy after the JFK assassination when the secret service forcefully took his body out of Texas to Washington DC for the autopsy.

Obama on now, giving condolences. He says he will nominate a successor “in due time” therefore not tonight, saying it’s time to think about his family and colleagues.

I’m also scared to pieces. I didn’t realize how scared I was until I heard the news this evening and started bawling my eyes out. I’m still weepy.

“I guess the up side is that recess appointments are for only 1 yr.”

That would be the best political move for the Dems. They don’t need more issues. eGOP doesn’t want to fight. Just let him make a recess appointment and let the next President select the replacement.

That’s not best for the country, but I don’t want to see the eGOP pansies approve a permanent pinko bench legislator.

But did he have a protective detail? If so, why did it take until morning to find him dead. Do Supreme Court justices have protective details? Can anyone answer this?

Baldwin, isn’t it correct that for the Senate to confirm that 3/5 of the Senate is required. And if so, then Obama and the democrats won’t get a liberal on scotus.

Even while digesting the sad news of losing such a wonderful man, you guys have to add your filthy silly comments.

Here’s a thought. IF they are able to shove another wise latino down our throats, there goes your precious Cruz. They’ll vote that he’s ineligible. How’s that going to work out for you?

Best hope right now, Cruz and Rubio and Paul bind together, do their flippin jobs and filibuster any bs.

RIP Justice, you will be sorely missed. Sending prayers to his family in their time of need.

I have known Scalia for years. He loved red wine, Marlboros, and beef. A great guy. I loved him.
