IIRC, a tie sends the case back to the last court to have heard it.

What happens if there is a deadlocked case?

I did a little research, and this is not confirmed, but when this happens the SCOTUS issues what is called a per curiam decison, which basically upholds lower court rulings.

What happens if there is a deadlocked case?

When the Court is deadlocked, the lower court's decision is "affirmed by an equally divided Court." This resolves the case, but hold no precedential value (i.e., does not affect later cases).
