Ted Cruz and Ben Carson: Next president should name Scalia replacement
Washington Times ^ | Saturday, February 13, 2016 | Seth McLaughlin

Sen. Ted Cruz, a 2016 GOP presidential contender, said that a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia should be made after President Obama’s successor takes the oath of office.

The news of Scalia’s death quickly spilled over onto the campaign trail, where Republicans praised him and offered his family their condolences.

Mr. Cruz called Scalia “an American hero” on Twitter and made the case against Mr. Obama having the chance to push forward a replacement.

“We owe it to him & the Nation, for the Senate to ensure that the next president names his replacement,” Mr. Cruz said.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson made a similar argument.

Why just mention these two?

Maybe because they were the first two to respond, and maybe the only two who had responded at the time of the publishing of this article?

Um, Trump actually said it first, then in the debate FIRST named two very conservative replacement suggestions. But nice try.

Trump gave the right answer. Of course Obama will nominate someone. He has the right to do it and he will do it. Trump pointed out that the Senate must stop it and delay it until a new President is in the WH,

Obama has announced that he will nominate someone in due time. Trump is on the mark again.

Wrote my 2 WY Senators before the debate NOT to confirm ANY nominee for SCOTUS until after the election.

PLEASE FReepers, write your Senators about this! Glad Cruz and Rubio said what they did, given their roles. The others, not so important.

Too bad Teddy couldn’t think of any conservative replacements for Scalia. Funny how Trump could name two right off the top of his head.

It may not make any difference, stalling until after the election. This should be done; however, on Jan. 3, 2017, Congress adjourns. I can see nothing stopping Obama from then appointing a new Justice of his choosing as an interim appointment as Congress will be adjourned, not just out of session, but adjourned. It then all becomes a question of what the definition of “adjourned” as opposed to “out of session” means. Can Obama get away with it? And who will decide the court case, a 4-4 split SCOTUS? Questions, questions, anyone got any answers?

It will happen exactly as Trump said.

Obama WILL NOMINATE a new leftist hack.
Take it to the bank.
(much more leftist than Romney could ever have)

Obama will say he has nominated a centrist.
The media will of course side with Obama.
Career politicians in senate will lose nerve and say AYE to the new SCOTUS nominee.

The republicans will use the same excuse as before...the president has a right to nominate whom he wants.
We can not stop the government from functioning.
blah blah blah...

And then Obama will get all his liberal agenda passed
through SCOTUS on 5:4 or 6:3 votes.

Pray no other justice dies or resigns in 2016.
There is a good chance next president gets to nominate 2 justices.

Didn't Trump say that Obama will nominate, but Senate will "delay, delay, delay"? (Or maybe he said Senate should "delay, delay, delay"?)

Pitchforks and torches -- symbolic, of course -- might make the Senate sit up and take notice, and do the right thing for a change. If they proceed with moving forward on anything Obama does, their DC careers will be history and I hope they understand that.

Yes, they are absolutely right.

And the DemocRats should feel the same way, since they have two very different candidates to choose from, one of whom they believe will be the next president.

It is up to people of the US decide who is to be their leader, and it is only fitting and proper that that person should have the honor of making the nomination.

(At least this should be the talking point to throw into their faces when they bitch and moan about Republican obstructionism.)
