Brian Sandoval, the centrist Republican governor of Nevada, is being vetted by the White House for a possible nomination to the Supreme Court, according to two people familiar with the process.
Sandoval is increasingly viewed by some key Democrats as perhaps the only nominee President Obama could select who would be able to break a Republican blockade in the...
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday pledged âno actionâ on any Supreme Court nomination before Novemberâs election, saying the decision ought to be left to the next president.
The White House declined to comment Wednesday for this story. White House press secretary Josh Earnest has emphasized in recent days that the president has not arrived at a short list of potential nominees.
[Republicans vow no hearings, no votes for Obamaâs Supreme Court pick]
The nomination of a GOP governor â albeit one with a bipartisan record â could break that resolve.
Sandoval met Monday with Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid, a fellow Nevadan with whom he enjoys cordial relations.
A person familiar with the conversation said that while Sandoval told Reid he had not made a final decision on whether he would accept a Supreme Court nomination, he would allow the vetting process to move forward. Another person in Nevada familiar with the process confirmed that the process is underway.
Sandoval could not immediately be reached for comment.
It is unclear how many potential nominees are undergoing White House vetting for the high court vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scaliaâs death. Obama was seen last week carrying a thick binder of materials on potential picks to review.
Obama outlined his thinking in a guest posting on SCOTUSblog Wednesday: âA sterling record. A deep respect for the judiciaryâs role. An understanding of the way the world really works. ..

Good. The Republicans can say they rejected a Republican and politics have nothing to do with it. The “Biden rule” clearly states no Supreme Court appointments in an election year.
The GOP should welcome any such nomination. Say, “Thank you”. Get it thru committee, even.
And schedule the hearings to commence first thing, Wednesday morning, November 9.
That should provide enough time for all those that have concerns to make their thoughts known.
Totally unrepentant RINO. No way.
People in NV don’t know what “Vichy” means.
Didn’t Sandoval defeat Reid’s son in the last governor’s race?
Vichy is right. Sandoval let the BLM thugs and a bunch of Mercs cross over into Nevada and start abusing the citizens of his state at will and did absolutely nothing about it. I mean nada. It was outrageous. I’m talking about the Bundy episode. Sandoval is the worst of the worst of RINO governors.
This is all a bait and switch.
Once Reid kicks open the door to judicial reviews, Obama pulls him and drops off Holder.
If the Compost calls anyone a “centrist”, watch out!
He swaps spit with Dirty Harry.
“Nuff said.”
This character is a pro-abortion RINO.
Bingo, you are correct.
Remember Clinton’s AG picks? Two of them had to withdraw after “serious issues” were discovered. It was all about softening up the committee to confirm his REAL choice, Janet Reno.
Same thing will happen here. The GOP will agree to begin hearings and then some bit of disqualifying dirt will be leaked. But the precedent of holding the hearings will have been set. Enter the next (real) nominee.
Folks, if you're reading this, you know what needs to happen.
If you can, please support the forum at this time. Thank you.
I have no idea...I’m from Tennessee...I just can’t stand Dirty Harry...
He also signed the largest tax increase in NV history? That is exactly why the republicans in NV are so angry.
This means that Obama has got Sandoval’s NSA file and there’s enought good stuff in it so that Sandoval can be controlled like Roberts has been.
Oy. Why do I have nightmare images in my head of McConnell (et al.) starting back in surprise, harrumphing once or twice, and saying (in an affable tone designed to placate liberals), “OH! Well... when I said that we’d never approve anyone under Obama, we didn’t think he’d be so reasonable as to suggest THIS! This certainly calls for open-minded dialogue and across-the-aisle efforts...”
(*shudder*)
Then Miguel Estrada should be the GOP spokesman to address the charge...and fyi - hispanic is NOT a race.
Sandoval emerged as a steadfast supporter of RKBA a few years back when liberal-assed Tick Segerblom managed to get a vote on requiring background checks for firearms passed in Nevada by one vote. We packed the statehouse and put a few thousand people on the street directly outside of the NV State Senate building in the snow in opposition to the bill.
Gov. Sandoval promised a veto *long* before the actual vote and delivered that veto with a ‘No means no and I told you I would veto this’ statement when he did it. Didn’t pocket-veto it or any other baloney like that. Went straight out with the veto and told the out-of-state gun banners to STFU. The end.
In the next election immediately following that, the Democrats who voted for RKBA all held their seats but the Democrats who supported the gun control measure all got tossed out on their ears. That didn’t escape anyone’s notice.
Say what you like about Governor Brian Sandoval but he did indeed held the line. He’s got very high approval rating in this state. Well over 60% and I think I’ve seen it as high as 78% job approval rating.
That was my first thought when I read this too. When all else fails, the Obamaites always try to find a way to play the race card.
Oh please. Why not just some guy off the street?
