I don't know if this applies to US users, or not. Note that the article is from the UK.

I bought a Kindle a few years ago and I found it very much a pain in the neck. It’s sat in a drawer now about 3 years. I guess after this it won’t have a chance.
I will just have to buy books. Lol.

Mystery Kindle update will block readers from books after Wednesday
Couldn't care less. Kindles are nice reading devices, but I have no interest in the Amazon echosystem. I've bought a couple of Kindles, I put them into airplane mode when setting up and never take them online. I load books onto them via USB in MOBI format.

My wife loves her Kindle. Wore out a paper white one. Santa got her a new one for Christmas. I also installed the Kindle PC app so she can read her books on the PC. If she’s happy, I’m happy.

To update Amazon recommends users plug in their devices to mains power and leave it connected to the internet overnight. Kindles may restart several times while applying the fix. I have 3 devices. The one that wasn't updated took about 10 seconds.

And this is the reason I don't have a kindle.
I would like one.
Have considered it a time or two.
But actions like this from Amazon make me think twice.

I got the message several weeks ago, and tried to do the update on my old Kindle ebook. It wouldn’t update anything, so I’ll wait and see what happens. Couldn’t find a relevant update for my Fire. And the message didn’t specify which machine they were talking about.
Poorly managed process from Amazon.

Another headline that completely distorts facts. There is no update that will block readers from books after Wednesday.
There is a required update that must be applied by Wednesday. This update normally is applied when the Kindle is plugged in and left charging.
If the Kindle is discharged, this will not happen automatically. Keep it charged.
If the deadline passes and the Kindle still has a dead battery, a manual update will be required. It looks as if the manual update is not particularly technically challenging.
Truth in headlines!

It has not explained what the fix addresses and had not responded to a request for comment by the time of publication. This is tech-speak for "high-profile security update." They're acknowledging that something very bad could happen to the device if they publish the actual issue, so they're keeping it veiled. Microsoft did the same thing with Windows 8 when they forced everyone to Windows 8.1.

Apparently, this does not impact the Kindles on our pc, Chromebook and Androids phones and tabs.
