How Carter Beat Reagan (Or how polls got it all wrong)
The American Spectator ^ | 9.25.12 | Jeffrey Lord

Remember when Jimmy Carter beat Ronald Reagan in 1980?

That's right. Jimmy Carter beat Ronald Reagan in 1980.

In a series of nine stories in 1980 on "Crucial States" -- battleground states as they are known today -- the New York Times repeatedly told readers then-President Carter was in a close and decidedly winnable race with the former California governor. And used polling data from the New York Times/CBS polls to back up its stories.

All of which will doubtless serve as a reminder of just how blatantly polling data is manipulated by liberal media -- used essentially as a political weapon to support the liberal of the moment, whether Jimmy Carter in 1980, Walter Mondale in 1984 -- or Barack Obama in 2012.

I came across this article, that is more relevant than ever, about manipulatiing polling data. In this case proving Carter was going to beat Reagan in 1980.... and we all know how that turned out ;)

Now, of course, the polls "prove" Hillary will beat Donald Trump

Don't you believe it!

Will there be a “there you go again, Hillary” moment?

What else do the Cruz people have at this point?

They want to scare people into voting for Cruz, nothing else.
As if they can guarantee those numbers up until November.

It’s absurd for anyone to take a poll 8 months out seriously. These are the same people that swore Trump would never break 50%!

The polls being wrong in 1980 is a great indication that they will avian be wrong in 2016.

I don’t remember them saying Carter would win.

The day before the election they were saying the race was too close to call.

Of course they were still way off as Reagan won in a landslide.

Trump will mop the floor with Hilary. It will be a landslide of epic proportions.

The polling was rigged

Only abc,cbs,nbc back then

And Gallup was about the only polling outfit

Carter was way ahead until the last week and then they had to make the polls more realistic because the election was fast approaching

They tried for months to influence the election

Carter wasn’t being investigated by the FBI either.

I believe it. The media did a real job on Reagan. They had everyone believing that Reagan was a idiot and a mad man that would get us into war. Then, came the debate. He came off as smart and reasonable, and the perception of him changed overnight.
The problem with Trump is that everyone already knows him, and the only surprises will be even more negative. He is losing now before the Dems even got started. He will lose by a landslide.

I am a big believer in the power of a demoralized voting block.... not voting. The Bernie people will not vote for Hillary, the Hillary people will not vote for Bernie. I feel like the indictment or backlash of no idictment of Hillary will drive down her voter turn out.

Exactly

I disagree. Look what happened with his prediction in Brussels in January... it wont take many more of those moments where he is calling the Chamberlands idiots, and he will be sitting there saying.... I told you so.

Not at all. Did you watch his AIPAC speech it was a triumph and got a standing ovation. It has been widely praised.

As I remember the race in 1980, the polls from the last weekend mostly showed Reagan with a slight lead. What was captured in those polls was the late-deciders breaking heavily toward Reagan. IIRC, it was late Sunday evening when Pat Caddell told President Carter that there was no way that he was going to win reelection on Tuesday because some key battleground states had slipped out of their reach.

Also as funny. "There you go again..."
