Conservatives to pounce if GOP relents on Supreme Court
politico.com ^ | 3/28/16 | Burgess Everett

There are plenty of plausible reasons why Republicans might eventually fold in the standoff over the Supreme Court: Overwhelming public opinion, a Democratic pressure campaign, and vulnerable GOP senators trying to save their jobs, to name a few.

But there's another even more persuasive reason they won't: The wrath of the right wing.

Story Continued Below

.

. The activist right has been galvanized by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's quick and forceful insistence that the Senate will not take up a high court nominee for the rest of Barack Obama's presidency, spending millions already to defend the GOP position with likely lots more to come. Tea party groups that have dissed McConnell for years as an establishment sellout are singing his praises.

It's safe to say all of that would end the instant Republicans agreed to take up Merrick Garland's nomination. And the fire would turn inward at the worst possible moment for Republicans, as the party is scrambling to save its narrow Senate majority in November.

“If the senators start to move off of this position, the biggest problem they are going to face is going to be a loss of support … they’re going to alienate the most active part of their constituency,” said Adam Brandon, president and CEO of FreedomWorks. “I want Mitch McConnell to see that the potential grass-roots army is far stronger than anyone on K Street.”

That should put the fear of God in them.

Overwhelming public opinion

I don't believe public opinion is "overwhelmingly" in support of odumbo's nominee. Or even of the Senate considering him. Where's the proof? Some rigged poll?

Bosh!

Hey, liberals, stop using the courts to legislate over and against the will of the people, and we’ll stop making such a big deal over them. If judges were judges instead of appointed-for-life demigods seeking to remold the culture, the confirmation process would function as intended.

Man, I love that Cantor story.

Then-House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor (R-Va), was considered untouchable and inevitable. Here's how it went down---the defeat of Boehner's right hand man--Eric Cantor.

<><> the showboating Cantor had tons of money---spent 26X times his opponent's $100K.

<><> Cantor consistently polled an astounding 34 points ahead of his unknown opponent.

<><> Cantor was considered "inevitable" and "untouchable".

<><> Cantor had no ethics problems.

<><> Cantor sucked-up to an anti-tea party group.

<><> Cantor sucked up to the latino vote.

<><> Cantor showboated his leadership---was deeply into (gag) "diversity."

=============================================

BY CONTRAST CANTOR'S PRIMARY OPPONENT:

<><> Brat ran as Cantor's TERM LIMIT

<><> Brat roundly opposed, and was vociferous against amnesty.

<><> Brat ran as a staunch conservative (now in Congress he has a bonafide 100% conservative rating.)

<><> On election day, Brat got 18,000 more Repub out to the polls than the previous election that elected Cantor.

================================================

CANTOR IN DEFEAT----DUMBFOUNDED:

HERE'S THE KICKER Cantor ran high-priced ads
delineating his opponent's "inferior" positions... but
voters liked what they heard and came out in droves for Brat.

=======================================

NOTE The self-absorbed Cruz made no effort to help the conservative Brat in his uphill race against the show-boating Cantor. No wonder not one Republican Senator endorsed Cruz.

I really do think this is a case of the tail (GOPe) wagging the dog (the base).

Nobody trusts the GOPe to pick a Supreme Court nominee, I think John Roberts has been a sufficiently bad experience for us to never EVER trust these SOBs ever again.

If you can’t trust your own “side”, or the other guys side, doesn’t it make sense that giving a fair hearing to a nominee that NEITHER of them are happy about can’t be any worse than what each side would pick, given their dithers?

Don’t forget too that Ted! was all in for Roberts, so another nail in that particular campaign coffin

Well, Burgess Everett is Mitch McConnell’s stenographer at Politico.

But they know the anger is real! We’ve taken no prisoners before, and will again!

It's just another off-the-cuff remark in a Politico story that has no proof other than the author's assertion. You know its bogus because the average American citizen doesn't even know who is on the Supreme Court right now, much less who is nominated to it. Just watch any video on the subject from MRCTV or Watters’ World. MRCTV has one up now where people in the street are asked about Obama’s nomination of “Judge Reinhold” to the USSC. They all say its great. Yeah, really great, nominating a washed-up actor from the 1980s. “Entertainment Nation”, for sure.

Washington needs an enema, no question. But I think this refusal to give hearings is just another example of the GOPe trying to gin up support for an action they themselves want to take. Does that result in them shooting themselves in the foot, again? Absolutely, but since when has that ever mattered, because it is conventional wisdom down there that Congress can exist forever with approval ratings in the single digits or low teens and everything will be just fine.

Mitch is insulated the next two times around, so all fire should be focused on Ryno this year.

But the danger -- and the intent of this outright lie -- is that someone will read it (okay, it's Politico, so an actual reader is probably unrealistic) and accept it as a fait accompli. It's a common trick of the Alinskyites.

What I see is that you’ve got Mitch’s guy here trying to get the story out there that McConnell will get horribly and terribly punished by his own voters if he gives a hearing to a nominee that Obama wants to feed to the wolves and the GOPe regards as not exactly what they want. If Trump is robbed of the nomination you’re going to wind up with either a Clinton, a Sanders, or some guy with the GOPe seal of approval. What kind of nominee do you think you’ll get then?

Sorry, I’m not buying what McConnell’s guy is trying to spoon feed.

I guess anyone who thinks Obama’s nomination of Judge Reinhold to the USSC is a great idea will also think Politico's take on this (i.e., their lying) is also true.

You know, I think these GOPe a-holes have spent so long using the conservatives as a foil, that it has slipped right past them that they live in a bubble. Increasingly, I think they have looked down their noses at anyone who opposed them, despite the fact that those reasons have been ones that resonate with an increasingly large portion of the electorate. They never revised, they still view all opposition as the bleatings of drug addicted, welfare receiving, marginalized, uneducated and ignorant, backward people.

I’m starting to think I may not be a conservative as I’ve thought I was the last 45 years.

When looking at people who I detest for their support of socialism and claim they are conservative I realize I’m not like them.

So someone is misleading people, is it me or people like, Ryan, McConnell, McCain, Kasich, Rubio, Cruz or is it me?

If he relents and conservative take their revenge on his hand-picked cronies, he is done as majority AND republican leader.

Not if he waits until after the election and then brings it up in a lame duck session before the next president is seated.

They stab us in the back, that's what they do.
