California's $15/hour wage could help workers, cost jobs

A political deal to raise California’s minimum wage to a nation-leading $15 an hour could help some workers cope with the state’s crushing cost of living but also deprive other low-wage earners of jobs altogether, economists said Monday as Gov. Jerry Brown and other leaders touted what would be a landmark agreement.

California’s economy is larger than that of most countries, with a wide diversity of earners. While newly minted millionaires gentrify neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area, some Central Valley field hands lack access to clean water. A jump from the current $10 an hour spread over six years would affect millions. […]

On Monday, Brown touted the deal his administration struck with legislative and labor leaders as potentially historic, calling it a matter of economic justice. Under the proposal, which the Legislature has yet to approve, the minimum wage would rise gradually, reaching $15 by 2022. After that wages would rise with inflation, though in tough economic times the governor could delay increases. …

I wonder if Brown has a sign hanging on his doorknob that says “Genius At Work” or something. I’d like to go back to the 70s in a time machine and show everyone what a tyrant he was destined to become.

It seems tyrants always start out being objects of ridicule. I’ll never underestimate another politician.

Brown and the democrats don’t want the $15 minimum wage on the ballot because it might not past. Even in California there are some smart people. The politicians are going to ram this through in Sacramento.

Yay .... more jobs moving out of California and eventually overseas as the US adopts the $15/hr Federal Minimum Wage. People forget that there is something called “Cause and Effect.” Don’t forget that all other wages will have to be adjusted accordingly.

Obviously, Crazyfornia beat him to the punch...

This is all about setting a national precedent. You'll see "workers" in other states demanding that their legislature pass $15/hr as well, and then it'll become national without the federal government lifting a finger.

Again, this is precisely why I no longer support the GOP or conservative organizations. They should be out there educating people that the minimum wage hurts the very people it's intended to help.

So, someone making $14/hr will get $19?
This whole thing is pushed by unions whose wages are set at minimum wage plus so many dollars. They get an unnegotiated raise.

Costco is developing RF chips for its goods so that you will push your cart through a sensor and your card is charged. No more checkers. Others will follow, so the scanner cashier will go the way of the buggy whip.

When Juan Peron became President of Argentina, he gave everyone a 3,500 percent raise. The populace became angry because the inflation rate was over 5,000 %.

It's the Dem way. Help the workers lose their jobs so they can get on welfare easier.
