Cruz tops Trump in North Dakota delegate race
Politico ^ | 04/03/2016 | Shane Goldmacher

FARGO, N.D. — Ted Cruz’s preferred candidates won the vast majority of convention delegates available in North Dakota over the weekend, taking 18 of 25 slots in the state in another show of organizational strength over Donald Trump.

It’s still not clear how loyal all of Cruz’s slate will be if the Republican nomination heads to a contested convention in Cleveland, as several included on it told POLITICO they were only leaning toward Cruz, or simply opposed to Trump.

But the result was bad news for Trump, who may need unbound delegates like those in North Dakota to lift him above the 1,237 delegate threshold to secure the GOP nomination this summer on the initial ballot. Only one of the 25 delegates selected Sunday has publicly signaled he might back Trump.

“This is a catastrophic outcome for the Trump campaign in North Dakota,” said Jason Miller, a senior adviser to Cruz. "Just when you thought the Donald’s horrible, very bad, no good week couldn’t get any worse, it just did.”

The North Dakota delegation has been heavily sought after because they are free agents from the first ballot in Cleveland, able to support Cruz, Trump or John Kasich. State rules do not, however, require to name the candidate they support before being elected — leaving their votes in question up until the convention in July.

The selection of delegates came after a hard-fought weekend of schmoozing and arm-twisting, as Cruz delivered a keynote convention address, Carly Fiorina campaigned on his behalf all weekend, and Ben Carson spoke for Trump. Kasich’s campaign sent former Sen. Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire as their top surrogate but the state party gave him an untimely speaking slot after the delegate ballots had been cast.

What about the “we the people” race. LOL. Should Cruz win the nomination by manipulating delegates, he’ll never be viewed as legitimate by the people in the states Trump won.

He will need votes of people and this is not how it is done.

Cruz is not a person who will ever be respected.

He is a sick little man.

Cruz is just smarter and savvier than trump. so ridiculous that trump doesn’t really know what he’s doing and is being thwarted in these kinds of settings.

Someone should tell "smarter and savvier" Cruz that he needs millions of ACTUAL voters to show up for the general election in November.

Not a handful of stolen delegates from Louisiana, Kentucky & South Carolina... :)

There you go again, using that term “stolen.” Admit it, Trump has had his “Todd Aiken” moment and is damaged goods. If I was a delegate, I wouldn’t be pledging my vote to Trump.

I always enjoy the satisfaction of defeating left-wing liberal socialists.

Even when they have billions of dollars and claim to be conservative.

When the record of political support overwhelming points to just the opposite.

And those who have been misled.....shall see the light and be welcomed back with open arms.

As long as they bring popcorn.

Lots and lots of popcorn.

heh.

Jedi.

Oh ye of little faith. It’s only Monday.

Any hour now Donny will say something stupid to piss more people off.

Give it time. Give it time.

:-)

This is far too easy.

Jedi.

So you’re only a fiscal conservative, not a social conservative. Libertarian I guess.

I don’t worry about non-winning, red meat issues that the so called conservatives fund-raise on, but do nothing about.

What social issues has your party championed and won? How much money has gone down the rabbit hole to elect your so called conservatives and what has it gotten you?

20 Trillion in debt, gay marriage, abortion run amok, globalism, open boarders, etc.

I’m a realist.

Those issues were ALLOWED to happen by the social conservatives. They only paid lip service to them, because if they were solved, the well of campaign money would stop.

As for what party do I identify with? Well, none. I don’t have a label, because once I have a label, then someone else gets to tell me how I’m supposed to behave. They can then criticize me and attempt to shame me into being what they want (usually a donor).

Sorry, I think for myself. If you don’t think I’m a conservative, well then I’m not. I won’t give you or anyone else that power over me.

I’m an American. Not a conservative-American, not a Liberal-American, not an African-America, not a White-American, not a hyphenated nothing American.

Just American, and I’m as individual as they come, the way Americans used to be. The way we used to be proud to be. The way I was raised to be.

Sorry, I don’t want to belong to anyone’s secret club.

Wait until next week when NY and Penn. come up, we will see how well Cruz does in those States.

Yeah wait until those liberal states vote, we will show Cruz who is the conservative in the race.

So, there are no conservatives in those States?

By next week Cruz will have no shot at winning the nomination with the required number of delegates but he isn't concerned about that, he wants to steal the election at the convention.

It’s often used as one.

‘Cruzers’ started to be used respectfully, but it seems nowadays to be used to slam. Same with ‘Trumpers’ or ‘Trumpees’ or whatever.

I prefer to use ‘Cruz supporters’ when trying to speak respectfully just so it can’t be misinterpreted.

Of course, when dealing with trolls, respect tends to be the first casualty, so I freely admit to flinging out insults too. In my defense, I try not to be the first to fling it out. Tough but fair.

Yes

And I guess I mis-spoke when I said I didn’t worry about those issues. I worry about them, but I don’t believe any so called “conservative” is going to do anything about those issues except use them as a fund-raising tool.

Been there. Done that. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice... well you know.

Correct. I believe abortion is murder - but look what the Media DeathStar did to Trump with the issue.

And Trump has been the only Republican ever to be able to endure the direct beam of the Media DeathStar.
