Forget Trump. Paul Ryan is the likely GOP nominee

But even if an almost best-case scenario shakes out for Cruz, this is a suicide mission whether he realizes it or not. Because a brokered convention needs two — not just one — sacrificial lambs. Coming within 100-150 delegates of Trump will do a lot to convince any remaining delegates not that Cruz is the answer but that Trump really doesn't have any chance of getting enough Republican support to even remotely challenge Hillary Clinton in the general election.
.
.
.
Ryan's chances of winning are a different discussion, as is the crucial decision of who would be his running mate. But in any case the current Speaker of the House stands a much better chance than Trump, who cannot beat Clinton, and Cruz, who cannot win the nomination.

But you just answered your own question, they’ll change whatever rules they want to change if they really decide this is worth using the nuclear option.

Will they? I don’t trust any of them not to. They may figure it’s better to try to retain control than to let Trump win and assuredly lose it.

It is impossible for Paul Ryan to be the nominee if the delegates vote to retain rule 40.

Literally anyone can be the nominee, even under Rule 40. Because after the first ballot, the delegates can vote as they wish. If a majority in 8 or more states then switch to Ryan, he CAN be nominated under Rule 40.

That's my take on it anyway.

I guess a question then comes, can a rule be changed between ballots, say between 2 and 3? If there were enough delegates that would vote to change that rule at that point, I suspect some chaos might ensue.

Of course, this would also be electoral suicide. But if there are some things that the Republican establishment is not shy about if they see near term political or financial advantage, chaos and suicide would be right there on the list.

And the delegates can make it completely impossible by agreeing to keep rule 40.

So what will happen at the convention is, Priebus will step up to the mike and announce "The proposal put forth is to keep rule 40! All those in favor?"

[THUNDEROUS SHOUTS OF "AYE!"]

"All those opposed?"

[crickets]

Priebus slams the gavel. "The 'Nays' have it! The proposal to keep Rule 40 is turned down; Rule 40 is removed!"

In the shadows, McConnell and Ryan clap...

The delegates can make it by recorded vote.

A lot of us didn't understand that that the basic rule is that the rule gets written after the primary but before the convention vote.

It should clearly say that "these rules are valid for 2012" in the rules if they are temporary rules. It's confusing otherwise.

I think new rules should affect the next convention, not the current convention. Changing the rules after the candidates have spent time and money playing under the existing rules just seems wrong.

I like rule 40, only because it helps my candidate Trump and almost ensured he was the only candidate. I'm indifferent as to whether they keep it for future conventions.

If delegates really supported the candidate they were named for, it's unlikely they will do away with rule 40 for this convention. If the GOPe apparatus gets to named the delegates regardless of who won them in the primaries, then the GOPe has total control and the primaries are a farce. It's only a matter of how transparent a farce the GOPe wants it to be.

Even if both Cruz and Trump dropped dead Ryan would not be the nominee.

I believe this is all theatrics to supress the Trump vote. Rightly so. Its there game as we All can see. Many here support these Shenanigans. I will wait and see. If Trump hits the magic # then it is his. If they play games and Our Votes dont count. I’m out. I Will register as a Democrate, and pull the lever for Sanders if he gets the Dem. nod.
No Problem.
In the meantime.
Go Trump

You folks need to step back and put this in perspective. We’re all USA - loving Patriots. You assume they are too. Sorry, no dice.

The GOP-E couldn’t care less who’s President. They’ll nominate Casper the Friendly Ghost and put on a convincing show for the masses, ensuring a Hillary win. No matter. They keep their power, they keep looting the Treasury. We keep getting screwed.

Trump being President means all of that ceases. Power gone. Graft gone. Looting the tax payers done.....and, lots of people with Ds and Rs next to their names could go to jail. Trump will go there. That’s why they’re scared shit less and will do whatever it takes.

I see you have so little knowledge of the political party system that you fantasize that to be somehow relevant in a contested convention.

[I believe this is all theatrics to supress the Trump vote]

I’m hoping the sudden uptick in poll numbers like the ARG poll in Wisconsin is proof that these “theatrics” are backfiring. And rightfully so!
