FBI director: We bought 'a tool' to hack terrorist's iPhone (Flash (Ugh) Video)

FBI Director James Comey said Wednesday that the government had purchased "a tool" from a private party in order to unlock the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters.

"Litigation between the government and Apple over the San Bernardino phone has ended, because the government has purchased, from a private party, a way to get into that phone, 5C, running iOS 9," Comey said.

Law enforcement officials revealed in late March that they had finally cracked the iPhone used by Syed Farook, one of two shooters in the December 2015 attack that left 14 people dead. But they did not go into details, other than to say an unnamed third party had provided assistance.

In an effort to access information stored on his phone, the government had pursued legal action in order to force Apple to help bypass the phone's security features.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) declined to assist, saying that to do so would compromise the security of all iPhone users. The company argued that law enforcement officials didn't understand the consequences of creating a backdoor into the phone.

And Apple threw a temper-tantrum screaming fit and ended up with exactly what they claim to have been concerned about anyway.

Had they helped, they could have controlled the process, but now they have no control at all.

Apple has egg on it's face.

It looks as though Apple had already been “backdoored”. Probably more than once.

I don’t believe they hacked it. It’s too perfect. This way, the FBI looks all-powerful.

One of the great things about living in a free society is knowing that if a seller won’t do what you want then the buyer is free to shop around. There are always more sellers out there. Now, assuming the FBI is telling the truth, Apple and everyone else will know that Apple people aren’t the smartest people in the room.

Vindicated! As I told everyone on FR, the FBI hack has been revealed by FBI Director Comey to ONLY WORK on Apple iPhones that do not have the A7 and above processors that have the Secure Enclave. That means iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, 6Plus, iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, and the new iPhone SE are all still secure against the new tool that the FBI bought to open the San Bernardino Terrorist's iPhone 5C. That tool will only work on Apple iPhones such as the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5, which have the A6 processor and its built-in Encryption Engine. — PING!

Pinging dayglored, ThunderSleeps, and Shadow Ace, for their Ping Lists.

If the FBI bought a tool then that means a tool can be built by commercial entities and there may very well be other tools.

Apple screwed the pooch on this one. Now it is well known that Apple isn’t this uncrackable, or as swordmaker put it, “impossible” to crack device. Apple isn’t this “not even the power of the NSA can crack us”, but any ol’ programmer can do it.

Is this even legal? Are we supposed to think that the FBI will only use it for good, now that they have it?

The FBI director also said the purchased tool worked only on a "narrow slice of phones" that does not include the newest Apple models, or the 5S.

They'll have to buy all the separate options of the tool (slight modifications needed for each) to handle each version of ios and phone... for another $10 million per version.

They bought the tool from Cellebrite.

It’s hardly a secret.

Cellebrite was prominent in cracking Trayvon Martin’s phone.

They are the go to company for law enforcement when it comes to getting data off of mobile devices.

Why the FBI was unaware of them, is anyone’s guess.

Cellebrite can likely crack the latest phones, if you pay for them to do so.

I thought I had read that this only works on 5C iPhones or earlier because of the older OS. If the phone had been a 5S or newer with the more stringent OS it would not have been possible to crack the phone.

No, it doesn't. Had Apple done what the FBI's original Court Order required, it would have been far worse. You don't have a clue about what you are talking about. Apple even said that the iPhone 5C was openable, but the Court Order was a general order to create far beyond that. WAKE UP!

This iPhone 5C hack is NOT what was ordered in the Court Order. . . and is a "retail" one-at-a-time, sophisticated skill and equipment intensive technique that is not applicable to a universal attack on multiple iOS devices, which is what was possible with what the Court Ordered software development approach dictated, regardless of what YOU claim in your delusional claim of what the order said.

It was imperative that Apple fight that ill-conceived Court Order written by the FBI intended to give them a precedent in law to allow them to dictate that any American must bow down to authority at the drop of a governmental hat.

It would be more effective if the doggy door was large enough for a St. Bernard or Great Dane.

Security is only as strong as its weakest access. . . I had a house that the previous owner had such a doggy door installed. . . and a large kid or a small adult could easily crawl through it and did. Luckily they were scared back out by the infrared motion detector alarm system.

Alright, they have been shooting off their mouths about getting in the phone’s backdoor. Now, WHAT DID THEY FIND!
