NEW YORK (Reuters) - A comic gag turned into a gaffe for Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, triggering a social media storm that raged through Tuesday over what some said was their insensitivity to African-Americans.
New York voters head to the polls next week for the primary election on April 19. While Clinton has strong support from black voters, some supporters worry that Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders has begun making inroads with them.
Clinton and de Blasio took the stage on Saturday at the Inner Circle, an annual media roast of politicians that traditionally ends with New York's mayor delivering a snarky rebuttal in the form of a rehearsed skit, often with the help of Broadway cast members.
This year Leslie Odom Jr., who is black and plays Aaron Burr in the hit Broadway show "Hamilton," participated in the planned joke.
In the skit, Clinton kidded de Blasio about his delay in endorsing her bid for the White House.
"Sorry, Hillary, I was running on C.P. Time," de Blasio said, referring to the phrase "colored people time" used to indicate chronic lateness.
"I don't like jokes like that," Odom said.
Clinton then added: "'Cautious politician time.' I've been there."
The joke quickly led to an angry reaction on social media, with commentators criticizing Clinton and de Blasio for being insensitive to blacks. De Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, is African-American.
"In what kind of twisted world does a POTUS candidate make a #CPTime joke at a high $ event "inner circle" & ppl think it's ok... #wakeup" Jenny Li @jennyjenli posted on Twitter on Tuesday.
"@HillaryClinton did the equivalent of kicking Blacks in their butts by participating in #CPtime "joke". #NYprimary," tweeted Anthony B. @PoliticalAnt.

Yawn, they’ve got no place else to go and she knows it
If you’re white, you were born a racist. /sarc
The morning media news readers have already minimized this. If Trump, it would headlines for weeks.
I grew up with Jim Crow. Back in the 1950s you would hear real racism.
Over the last 6.5 decades I have been from the east coast of the US, westward to the east coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, Orsrailia, East Asia, and points in between.
I never heard the phrase CPT until I read this article.
The race-hustling poverty pimps are pushing the bounds of what will be tolerated.
Democrats are all bottled up racists. Much like when chicks gather together the epitomy of feminity within all of a sudden erupts like an annoying volcanoe of inane Kadarshian type gossip topic, you can bet when these white democrats get together the racism flies out cery naturally in jokes of this kind. Put DeBlasio and Hillary together and it is what happens: their natural KKk tendencies flare out.
They love their culture, ie. they love to keep them as savages and down, like in some kind of reservation, frozen in time, forbidden from evolving, anyone helping them grow being punished. So CPT makes absolute sense coming from them, but they let it slip out, their plantation plans. This is truly offensive and patronizing.
Exactly.
I first heard the phrase about fifty years ago, but I cannot remember the context. But the (liberal) person who wrote the article mentioned the phrase as if it were a common thing.
I've since read the phrase in a number of different stories. Don't really know how true or false it is. I've worked with a number of black people, and they were usually on time.
” I’ve worked with a number of black people, and they were usually on time.”
The only one I remember who wasn’t was an “athlete privileged” college football player. Drove a (free) Porsche, always had the “finer” things. He was a nice guy, but he was accustomed to thinking of himself as royalty.
I wouldn't be surprised if it is a common thing, for liberal people.
“This is truly offensive and patronizing.”
Do you think the melanin-enhanced among us will finally get it?
First I’ve heard of it as well...
Seems “fashionably late” has been hijacked!
DeBlasio said in an interview that it was a “staged event,” and that people missed the point. This is in a league with the excuse that calling for a conservative’s assassination was just a “joke.”
Politicians are forever claiming that nobody ever gets their “points.” Maybe it should dawn on them that their gaffes aren’t points, or that they just don’t have the ability to make points that people actually do get.
I’ve lived in Da Bronx, Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan and have never heard the phase C.P. Time.
Am I alone out here?
No, I’ve lived in the South my entire life, including the 60’s, and I have never heard it. Must be a Democrat inside joke.
I had no idea what they were talking about either. Must be in the same vein as “n***** rich”. So it’s OK for the Dumbocrat elite to call black people indolent. Good to know.
“Seems fashionably late has been hijacked!”
Fred Astaire in white tie chuckles suavely.
