Donald Trump will need this much money to run against Hillary Clinton

Half a billion. Minimum. That’s how much funding Donald Trump is likely to need if he becomes the GOP presidential nominee and runs against Hillary Clinton in the fall.

The estimate comes from Anthony Scaramucci, founder of the hedge fund Skybridge Capital, who’s a prominent Republican donor. “If you do the math, he’ll need 15,000 $33,000 checks,” Scaramucci tells me in the video above. “That’s $495 million. He’s late to the party on that. If he’s going to be the nominee, he needs to start organizing that now.”

Scaramucci is referring to the maximum amount individual donors can give each year to the Republican and Democratic National Committees, which is $33,400. The party committees play a large role in funding the presidential campaigns, and the donation limit is the highest for any committee that’s allowed to be directly involved with a campaign. Super PACs have no limit on donations, but they’re not supposed to coordinate (wink, wink) with the candidates’ campaign committees.

So far, Trump has loaned his committee about $25 million of his own money, and drawn another $10 million in donations from supporters. And he’s pledged to spend as much as $100 million of Trumpbucks on the race. But even if he did, he’d fall way short of the scratch typically spent on a presidential race. In 2012, for instance each side spent roughly $1 billion.

That means Trump, if he’s the nominee, will need help raising money from the Republican establishment he’s been feuding with. Trump, for instance, has called the RNC’s rules for selecting a candidate “rigged.” He has also mocked many of the party’s big donors, who have so far blown more than $200 million on super PACs supporting failed candidates long gone from the race.

No sweat. He’s self-funding. And $500 million is a measly 5% or so of Trump’s self-reported net worth. No Republican or conservative should feel any pressure to donate to Donald’s campaign. In fact, folks would actually be insulting him to toss their pennies his way. It’d be like offering to tutor Einstein in physics. Trump neither needs nor wants your help.

RE: No sweat. He’s self-funding. And $500 million is a measly 5% or so of Trump’s self-reported net worth.

That’s $500 million CASH. MINIMUM.

I am unsure if Donald Trump has enough money, and by that, I mean CASH to self-finance a general election run at the presidency.

Keep in mind that Hillary Clinton and the Super Pacs supporting her will spend north of 2.5 BILLION DOLLARS.

On the other hand, if you take away the value of his name, Trump’s net worth is probably somewhere in the 3-4 billion dollar range and most of it is tied up in ASSETS.

Trump keeps harping on the fact that he’s worth 10 Billion but most other estimates from Forbes to Bloomberg to Fortune put in in the range of between $4 to $4.5 billion.

Ask yourself if Donald Trump is really going to sell Trump Tower, the Trump International Hotel, his golf courses and his other properties at cut rate prices to pour the money into his political campaign?

It may not even be possible, but even if it is, do you really think Trump would liquidate most of his fortune to run for President?

When you consider that Trump has been so tight-fisted during the primary that he might run the first Presidential campaign ever to turn a profit, it seems very unlikely.

On top of that, keep in mind that Donald Trump has made the fact that he’s self-funding a central part of his messaging. If Trump were to win and change his mind, not only would it hurt him with his core supporters, it probably wouldn’t be all that effective. Trump’s fund raising operation so far has understandably been mediocre and the Super Pacs that were gearing up to support him were asked to stand down. Those Super Pacs were particularly important because there are hard limits on what rich supporters can give to campaigns, but not on what they can give to a Super Pac. Without major help from Super PACs, it’s highly unlikely that Donald Trump could win a general election.

Imagine a campaign where Hillary and her Super Pacs spend more than 3 billion dollars and Trump barely manages to stockpile 500 million in his war chest.

In every swing state, Hillary would have a better get out the vote operation, better staffing and she would be able to blanket the airwaves with her ads while Trump couldn’t compete. In a race like that, Hillary could win in a walk EVEN IF she goes to prison over her email server.

I don’t want this to happen but the point I am driving at is this — Trump CANNOT self-fund, unless he’s willing to sell his assets that are tied up in real estate.

The Republican nominee should get the party apparatus.

First of all, this jerks grammar sucks. Regardless, how the hell does he know Trump's personal financial position? Hell, just for starters, Trump's plane is worth $100 million. Some of the "experts" who pretend to have knowledge of Trump's financials have said his assets aren't liquid. My question to them is, "how do you know that?"

I agree. As I said on another thread, taking out the Beast should be easy. Trump's marketing department could put together a few ads depicting the dozens of her scandalous escapades, lies under oath, graphic photos of Stevens in Benghazi... All with voice overs.

Finally, these really funny videos can be used

I read on FB that he has released $20,000,000 to his campaign. Anyone else heard that?

Nah, he wouldn’t have to sell anything. With his net worth, I’m sure he could get lines of credit for at least a half billion. It’s my understanding that since he is classifying his payments to his campaign as “loans” that any funds he does raise before or even after the election can be used to pay himself back.

She could be a stuffed toy and win millions of votes. Remember the 47% that Romney talked about? That is over 50% now. Trump may be able to win the nomination on the cheap but the media won’t give him the 10 o’clock news coverage he has been getting if he has to mix with Clinton. My guess is that Obama will line up the black troops on her side, because she would have to defend his “legacy.”

5,000,000 donations. Ha ha ha. Trump has only raised $9M. Not a chance he gets 5M donations. Answer is he won’t raise the money. Another reason he would lose big.

This “Trump can’t” bullshit has got to stop. How long will the “conservative” wing (paid surrender monkeys) try to convince us.

Trump can and Trump will.

I agree with you. Trump will have no trouble raising small donations from his supporters. The only thing that would change that is if he started going for the big money donations.

Sanders has done it with small donations, and he's been taking in massive amounts of money.

Yeah, I Sean Hannity was talking about that yesterday, I believe Hannity said that $20 million was being dedicated specifically for the convention delegate fight.

Somehow I doubt we will see Trump mortgaging his properties to pay for his campaign.

I expect to see him running on the fly, chasing after whatever rabbits the Clintons throw in front of him.

Hillary will have 50 offices and thousands of paid canvassers in Ohio and Trump will complain about the system.

I read his sitdown with the Washington Post editorial board. It was pretty embarrassing. He really doesn’t know enough about the issues or even our form of government to be president.

PS - I voted for Rubio.

Ok, here is a hypothetical question:

If you have about $14 billion, and you spend a few $billion, are you still a billionaire?

And could you ever spend that much money?

This article is a joke.

My guess is that Obama will line up the black troops on her side, because she would have to defend his “legacy.”

Obama's going to be in for a bad disappointment...The Clinton's still hate him, if Hillary does get elected and no longer needs Obama I give the Clinton's a week after inaguration before they royally stab him in the back...

Hillary: "I would love to give you the free college and everything else I promised, but Obama left the country in must worse shape than I realized, I'm going to have to spend at least 4 years just cleaning up his mess.

Hillary is NOT going to let HER legacy be simply Obama's successor. The Clinton's will need to destroy Obama's legacy before they can build Hillary's up. They're also going to need a scapegoat to blame their own failings on and Bush just isn't going to cut it after eight year...

You seem to really know a lot about Trump's financial and business prowess. Explain further how Trump will finance his campaign after you've managed to build a dozen of these:
