You’re right. Spain does this every once in a while when they need to, in order to maintain a standing that might (in a hundred or so years) be reason enough to buy back the land from Britain.
“It’s always been ours. You’ve been unilaterally leasing it without our explicit consent.”
I think it was Thatcher that said America was built on philosophy while Europe was built on history. Sometimes it’s hard to give up those comfy three-hundred year grudges. You get so used to them always being around.
Thank gosh some foreign Country protect out weak American ships.
Muslims are killing people today over what happened fourteen hundred years ago.
with obama, why not? nothing to lose and get to look like tough guy against US
No one expects the SPANISH INCURSION!!
Crossing any strait is fraught with navigation regulations and “rules of the road.”
A naval warship, especially a SSN or SSBN, is most at risk while transiting a strait or canal. The Royal Navy has jurisdiction and the responsibility to ensure all parties crossing channels and straits, act responsibly.
As a navigating vessel, and a warship, there will be topsiders on sentry ensuring that no one gets too close — the rules of engagement are pretty clear (and standard practice). The entire crew is prepared from their hours upon hours of drill and practice.
There was no risk. The Royal Navy performed their responsibility. Spain might get their pee pee slapped in an arbitration panel for breaking navigation rules, which is something they’re obviously willing to pay in order to maintain their presence in the strait and retain their precedent.
In this the Spanish are like the moslems. Because it was once Spanish territory it’s supposed to always Spanish. Tough luck. Britain has held Gibraltar longer than Spain held it after taking it from the Moors. The people of Gibraltar do not want Spain. Also, Spain holds Cueta on the Morrocan coast. Are they going to “return it” to Morocco? No? Why not? Is Spain going to return the part of Portugal they stole in the early 1800s? No? Why not?
At end of article:
“In recent years Madrid has warned it is ready to impose a new border tax, close its airspace to planes using the British overseas territory’s airport, and investigate the affairs of Gibraltarians with Spanish economic interests.
The row escalated in 2013 after Gibraltar began building an artificial reef it said would improve fish stocks depleted by incursions by Spanish fishermen.”
So brit ecological activities are harming the livelihood of Spanish fishermen and it’s pissing them off.
Eco-nazis bringing us to war.
“All that submarine has to do is surface under the Spanish boat, problem solved.”
Probably not worth the damage. I saw the Greenville after it did that.
Michelle took the Charles Atlas course, Obuma FAILED!
When is Britain going to return the Elgin marbles to Greece?
Or maybe Spain thinks their own land belongs to them.
All Chinese, even those who oppose mainland China, will tell you they are furious that Britain had Hong Kong.
The Greeks want their Elgin marbles back.
Britain is not liked in any of those countries.
That you Chevy? I did not know you were a FReeper.
Well the problem for Spain is that it isn’t theirs.
They signed a legitimate treaty surrendering Gibraltar after losing a war.
Judging from the picture, the Spanish patrol boat is an inflatable? The words “patrol boat” alone create a different image.
Yeah, porpoise pop the sucker.
