Cops shot and killed a pit bull after it mauled a smaller dog to death in upper Manhattan Wednesday.

Jada, a Shih Tzu, was being walked at Hillside Avenue and Sickles Street in Inwood at 7 p.m. when the bigger dog attacked.

Rafael Alvarez, 40, who had been caring for Jada for a friend, suffered a lacerated hand trying to save her.

Two cops rushed to help, but when they couldn’t stop the attack, one shot the pit bull twice.

The pit bull’s owner wasn’t charged because he was trying to put a leash on the dog at the time.

All pitbulls should be shot and their owners imprisoned.

So he wasn't even charged for having his Pit off leash in NYC?

Shouldn’t the owner put the leash on the dog before they leave the house? This excuse makes no sense. The pitbull’s owner should be charged for violating the leash law and should pay damages for the loss of poor little Jada.

Why wasn’t the damned thing already on a leash?

Another newspaper said the pit bull “bounded out of the basement,” so he technically wasn’t outside, but the stupid owner should not have opened the door before putting on the leash. Where are people’s brains these days?

Another shocking, unexpected, self-radicalized lone wolf jihad pitbull attack. No worries, it’s a dog of peace. Just keep saying that.

I would rather have neighbors with loaded M2 .50 Caliber machine guns than self-described responsible pet owners of pitbulls or rotweilers.

Good people who own these animals are occasionally surprised by attacks like this. Ownership of certain breeds should be regulated just like exotic animals.

I would be willing to bet the vast majority of pitbull owners are Obama voters.

Guy is walking his pitbull, decides he wants a beer but the bar sign says no dogs. So, he leaves his pitbull outside and goes into the bar and orders a beer. A short time later a guy enters the bar and says ‘there is a chihuahua killing a pitbull outside’. The dog owner at the bar says there is no way a chihuahua is killing his pitbull. The second guy responds ‘I’m telling you if somebody doesn’t do something that pitbull is going to choke to death on that chihuahua’.

I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of people who have dogs in the heart of a city are Obama voters.

Dogs, like children, should have large grassy areas in which to live.

Good. I carry a suppressed .22LR for dispatching ANY off the leash pitbull here in Central AR. They've killed/maimed a half dozen people in the last few years. We lose a kid every other year it seems, with dozens bit/torn up.

I dare the "its not the dog its the owner crowd" to go ask the Doctors and nurses at Arkansas Children's hospitals what they think of pitbulls.

A pit bull killed another dog last week. I'm sorry for these dogs but am thankful that a small child wasn't the victim.

Some insurance companies won't cover pit bulls (and other breeds deemed dangerous). State Farm does cover them. When shopping for homeowners insurance, ask if the company covers pit bulls - if so, take your business elsewhere and tell the company why. A couple of states like Michigan don't allow insurers to discriminate against dogs, so you're stuck there.

I agree that the Pitbull's owner should be in violation of the leash law. Do they ticket drivers in NY for not having their seatbelt fastened, or do they let the drive off because "he was just about to fasten it"?

The owner of the Pitbull needs to be hit in the pocketbook real hard.
