THIS summer, when the Olympic Games are held in Rio de Janeiro, marathon swimmers, sailors and triathletes will be asked to compete in the highly polluted waters of Guanabara Bay and off nearby Copacabana Beach. Any athlete coming into contact with these waters has a high probability of becoming ill. Members of the United States junior national rowing team and competitive sailors have become sick with diarrhea, vomiting and flulike symptoms after training and competing around Rio, and they experience only incidental contact with the water. Marathon swimmers and triathletes will ingest this water and the consequences could be deadly.

Sounds like good advice to me.
However, if I was coaching an Olympic level swimmer, there is no way I’d bring him to the dark, gooey waters of Brazil and risk his health. Oh, and then there’s that pesky Zika thing.

And according to Obama, the ones who do win and are “successful” are just lucky. Lucky, I guess not to die of some horrible waterborne disease.

They could have had the meet in china at the three Gorges Dam. Running shoes are the norm for swimmers there as you can walk on the polluted waters it’s so thick.

Sounds just like the tap water in that part of the world. Besides, a brisk case of the trots should help those marathon swimmers squirt through the bay like torpedoes!
