Britain braced for a ban on second homes: (trunc)
Daily Mail UK ^ | 07 May 2016 | Victoria Finan and Lucy Crossley

Councils across the UK are set to consider banning people who already own homes from buying holiday cottages after a historic vote yesterday.

More than 80 per cent of voters in St Ives, Cornwall, backed proposals that will mean new housing developments will only get planning permission if homes there are reserved for full-time residents.

And now councils in the Lake District, Derbyshire Dales, north Devon and the Isle of Wight are all looking at schemes to prevent outsiders buying holiday homes.

But ministers are poised to oppose the ban, saying it could be regarded as unfair and discriminatory.

Tory MP Mark Garnier told The Times: 'The only home I own is in St Ives but I live in rented properties elsewhere. Would it be considered as a second home?

'I worry that it is discriminatory - that one person can buy a home but another can't.'

Sounds like they are getting close to Marxism to me. The next step is Dachas only for the Commissars.

Coming to America as well???? We’ll see.........

If people can’t buy as many properties as they want, then who owns property?

What I’m getting at is, what of condominiums, for example?? If individual owners don’t own them, then who does, some giant real estate company?

Or is this a step in the direction of the government owning all properties aside from your own individual home?

Off topic, but I’ve knows a few small time investors, who own a few houses or condo units, and who rent them out and make some money that way. If they didn’t own those units, I’m guessing that some big company would instead.

Probably what this is about. Plus the housing shortage due to lots of immigration.

I imagine after bans on second homes the next thing the communists will target will be people with too much home. I know single people who have inherited the family home and live alone. I might be one of those people someday. But I have heard others tell them “you don’t need that much house” and it makes my blood boil, especially the “you don’t need” part. As long as one can afford it and wants to live in a big house, let them!

Yep, I’ve heard people talk about “too much home”.

I am a classic case of that. I live in the house where we raised our kids. Well, nowadays, I live alone. My wife passed away, and the children are adults and have moved out. So theoretically I am taking up too much space. According to them, what does a single man need a 3 bedroom/2 bath house for????

The left hates private property and wants to eliminate it. This gets them one step closer.

Another step in the mindless quest to force equality by dragging everyone down to the bottom?

What’s next?

A limit on how many camels Londoners can own?

My stock response: "I don't need people who want to tell me what I don't need."

I like to have a little sport with you about British stereotypes, but this is not that kind of post.

Do you want to address this utterly bizarre, non-capitalistic anti-free-market legislation?

In short, what the EFF is going on over there???!?

Holiday homes are empty most of the year. Housing communities that are 80% empty 11 months of the year still consume resources like fire brigade protection without paying the accompanying sales and local taxes that help pay for them. It’s similar to the way large clusters of tax-free churches have strained some small Texas towns.

They probably need to reform local tax laws which are 400 years out of date. This probably seems easier.

Agreed. As well as how is it you have three cars? etc. Or how is it you vacation? etc?

We must not limit freedom of choice for those creating wealth, or those just managing to get by on what they make/earn/ MOO!

Successful people demonstrate what is possible to those that achieve and work to succeed. MOO

I heard someone on talk radio the other day (I forget who, maybe Michael Berry) say something about how the left hates the individual. The idea of you or me choosing to live in a manner they disapprove of is like an itch they can’t reach. Yet.
