West Point won’t punish cadets who posed with raised fists
The Washington Times ^ | May 11, 2016 | Andrew Blake

The 16 black West Point cadets who caused a stir after posing for a photograph with raised fists won’t be disciplined over the image, the U.S. Military Academy said Tuesday.

An internal investigation launched after the snapshot surfaced online has ended with authorities deciding not to discipline the cadets, but to offer them additional counseling ahead of their graduation on May 21, West Point’s superintendent, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr., said in a letter to the academy’s student body this week.

“While the inquiry did not find that these cadets violated a policy or regulation, it did determine that they demonstrated a lapse of awareness in how symbols and gestures can be misinterpreted and cause division,” he wrote on Tuesday to the Corps of Cadets. “The impact of this photo, regardless of its intent, is evident. It is unfortunate that this perception brought attention to our Alma Mater for all the wrong reasons.”

West Point confirmed last week that an investigation was launched amid concerns raised by the photograph, which shows 16 female members of the Military Academy’s Class of 2016 posing in uniform on school property with their fists raised in the air.

And justice demands that the offenders be EXPELLED. It is a privilege to attend one of the nations military academies and they did not live up to their oaths by witness of their conduct.

"What would happen if a bunch of cadets posed displaying a Confederate flag?"

Immediate expulsion for hate speech, and you know it.

There is no such thing as “white privilege” but I can show one hundreds of “black privilege” examples.

I think “Heil Hitler” is not even closely equivalent.

These young women better be careful. Not wise to step into the limelight this way.

What if they had been White cadets from Southern states posing with a Confederate battle flag?

Thank you. For the vast majority of them, they'll be much too busy learning the ropes of the real Army to worry about the limelight.

Being a platoon leader is often a 24 hour job.

How’d you like to be under their command? Uh, no thanks.

Lots of tribal favoritism... like working at the DOJ

The standard of proof in military justice is much lower than reasonable doubt. And their discipline would have been non judicial anyway.

Nothing burger.

The initial blogger that authored the post that went viral had no idea why the Cadets raised their fists. He just assumed...and being a Vet he should know better than to assume anything.

WP don’t care. The other Cadets don’t care.

Raising a fist in camaraderie and pride is not an endorsement of BLM or any other political movement.

I am proud of these Cadets. They can celebrate their accomplishments as Cadets, women, and blacks w/o causing any harm to the Republic or the Army.

However, the Sup is right to caution all Cadets and remind them that their actions will be highly scrutinized — and to be keenly aware of the potential for negative subjective (and knee-jerk) perceptions of observers.

Three generations Army - with the newest currently at WP

Go Army!

An army without strict discipline is not an army. When you join a fighting group you don’t do what you feel you want to do...you follow orders “to the T.”

Failure to do so will get you in the “brig” or thrown out...no exceptions! At least that used to be the way it was before the recruits feelings and opinions influenced whether they would obey orders and regulations they didn’t like.

WORSE YET...these aren’t enlisted ranks...they are the officers who will lead (or run) as the case may be.

From the dawning of time up until the mid 60’s children received paddling and spankings for bad behavior. In the latter 60’s to the mid 70’s they were placed in “time out.” After that, it all went to crap! We found that NOTHING was their fault...it was the fault of society and the reason they violated rules, expectations and laws was because their ESTEEM was damaged by those who enforced such rules.

Now, look where we are? Even the cadet officers can do anything they wish and the commanders are TERRIFIED of he repercussions heaped upon them by possibility of personal punishment in making them do anything. The new disease in military leaderships is “MothePanphobia – fear of everything or constant fear of the unknown like the press and physiologists along with racist “experts.”

Consequently, we don’t have any military any longer...just a mob of people who do what they think they want to do...not what they are ordered to do for THERE IS NO PUNISHMENT ANY LONGER!

The last major war we won was WWII. We’ve done nothing except show the world how weak we become with each international conflict and now they laugh at what we have as a Commander In Chief. What a “slap in the face” for all who gave their life and limb in protection of our way of life and country in the past.

Just makes me sick to my stomach!

Maybe he will put them all on the front lines of combat. That’s what they want, right? A fight?

Of course not. They're a protected group.

Black privilege in action.

How long before the armed forces allow blacks to use the raised fist in place of the standard military salute?............

Second louies screw up and these girls aren’t even louies yet. The NCO’s will get them into shape, the ones that will make it, that is. Still, this is a problem because the soldiers under their command will have this picture, guaranteed. They will need to have their s#@t together from day one.

I’m not even surprised.

What do you all think women in the military are going to do no matter what color their skin is?

They are going to get men killed.

“They should have their promotion timetables delayed six months to a year.”

Boy oh Boy! That will really show them won’t it? How terrible...delay their promotions! Wow! Now they know that the only result of their actions will only delay promotions and pay raises. With that said they ought to be much better officers now that they realize that no matter what...REAL PUNISHMENT IS A THING OF THE PAST...for everyone except WHITE people.

“The NCO’s will get them into shape, the ones that will make it, that is.”

That’s not right for the NCO’s are HORRIFIED of them. If they even look sideways at them they risk severe punishment, loss of rank and possible dishonorable discharge.

You can bet they “walk on eggshells” every day trying not to do, or say, anything that might set one off.
