The Target Boycott has reached a boiling point - and sales may suffer as a result

Target is facing a nationwide backlash for its support of transgender rights.

More than 1.2 million people have signed a pledge to boycott the retailer after it announced last month that it would welcome transgender customers to use any bathroom or fitting room that matches their gender identity.

Critics have been holding protests and demonstrations at stores across the country, and they are showing no signs of dying down.

Many aredemanding access to bathrooms of the opposite sex to support claims that "perverts" can now prey on children and women as a result of the policy.

The boycotters' goal is to force Target to reverse its policy, or at least make the retailer suffer for it by spending their money elsewhere.

But Target CEO Brian Cornell dug in his heels on the issue this week, saying Target won't reverse its stance. "We took a stance and we are going to continue to embrace our belief of diversity and inclusion," Cornell said on CNBC.

So what does that mean for Target's business? Sales may drop for at least short period, according to YouGov BrandIndex, a firm that measures consumer perceptions of major brands on a daily basis.

Before the boycott, 42% of consumers considered buying from Target the next time they shop at a department store. In the last couple weeks, that share has fallen to 36%, according to YouGov data provided to Business Insider.

Consumer perception of the brand has also dropped sharply. It's at its lowest point in two years. Despite the drop, Target is still in "positive" perception territory. In other words, there are still more people who think positively about Target than negatively.

"There's a very large group out there that supports Target's decision," says crisis management expert Kevin Dinino, CEO of San Diego-based KCD PR.

I guess his idea of diversity and inclusion means the exclusion well over a million shoppers.

I haven’t shopped at Target in years. I quit back when they stopped allowing the Salvation Army to set up outside their stores.

He belongs to NAMBLA? You’re kidding right, because that would alienate 99% of consumers.

Is any site keeping a list of all the crimes occurring in Target dressing rooms and bathrooms, since Target went down the sewer by allowing men into women’s rooms?

I’m sick of these GD crony-capitalists using divisive social issues and leftist politics as cheap marketing tools.

Target just sells cheap crap from China, but that’s not very trendy — so they play the progressive hipster game for cover. Until now, they’ve gotten away with playing with fire - but let’s hope this one blows up in their faces.

Miss my sarc /s tag at the end of my sentence? But it wouldn't surprise me all because just about every member I've ever heard about (that was outed) seems to be very wealthy and sexual perverts of the lowest order. Making $28M a year would def place him in that category. He also has the "look". If his wife hasn't figured out by now she's in denial....

“Ultimately, access to goods will outweigh moral outrage for many consumers”, says Larry Chiagouris, a professor of marketing... “There is a big difference between signing a petition compared to not taking advantage of a big sale at target. People will always take advantage of the sale.”

That’s an awful lot of stupid right there.

I used to go to Target first because they had good quality and reasonable prices. With the boycot in place I don’t even bother. There are many other alternatives plus the internet and Amazon.

They thought they could put women and girls in danger and nothing would happen. They change their policy or it’s over for Taget. I can’t belive that Target management do not have wives and daughters.

I wish FR had a reminder button that would ping you back to threads at set times. Lets see how Target is after three months, six, a year and so on.

Make Target feel the pain.]]

They likely won’t feel any pain as this administration has probably told them not to worry, that the gubmint will cover any losses they take as a result of a boycott

Same mentality as Hollywood who wonders why movies with Affleck, Damon, and Clooney aren't drawing the numbers they need on opening day anymore...

I don’t think that I can Boycott- I don’t ever shop there anyway...I have actually looked there for certain things, never found anything. They are a worthless store to me.

Can’t really boycott them because I very seldom go there. Maybe around Christmas for decorations. Don’t like their clothes or shoes and there a couple stores near by that are cheaper on everything else.

I boycotted Target when they wouldn’t allow the Salvation Army. Never been back. Never will.

Ditto. That told me they were all on board with deconstionism. I was all on board for spending my money elsewhere.

I stopped buying from them several years ago when I read here that they were selling greeting cards celebrating the sad disorder of same sex attraction.
