The Obama administration’s directive last week instructing public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of the gender they identify with has set off an intense debate.
Many politicians and parents have raised alarms about privacy and warned of predatory boys sneaking into girls’ bathrooms. But others say that such accommodations are critical protections for a vulnerable population.
For all of the heated debate, a central fact remains elusive: How many students are we talking about?
No one knows for sure. Researchers have not figured out how to obtain consistent, reliable answers from teenagers, much less younger children.
The best estimates are that the population is small, probably under 1 percent of adolescents.
What do national surveys show?
There are none. Pediatricians generally do not ask patients about their gender identity, and if they do, they do not usually report findings in national health registries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which analyzes much of our behavioral health data, has tested ways for students to identify themselves as transgender. But it has not yet settled on a satisfactory method, and it does not expect to include such a question in its adolescent health survey before 2019.
Are there any numbers at all?
Some local surveys have been done, with results falling in a narrow range.
A 2015 health behavior survey of 18,494 high school students in Dane County, Wis., which includes Madison, found that 1.5 percent of students identified themselves as transgender.
In 2006, the Boston Youth Survey asked 1,032 public high school students, “Are you transgender?” The responses were 1.6 percent yes, 86.3 percent no, and 6.3 percent “don’t know.” An additional 5.7 percent skipped the question.

Since they were in a public school, they could not even read the question, much less understand the big word in it.
So are we to have “transgender” bathrooms in kindergartens? In nursery schools? At day care centers?
Anyone who promotes sex “change” operations for children as young as that is a criminal and needs to go to jail.
Think about the teeming masses of humanity that have inhabited the earth through the millennia. Their hormones, manifested in the desire for food, shelter, sleep, safety in numbers, etc.
The urge to reproduce is as strong - stronger in some cases - as any of these.
The separation, even removal, of sexual desire of the opposite sex from one’s biological makeup has taken place almost exclusively in the minds of postmodern leftists who believe that human behavior is the product of societal norms rather than the other way round.
The point is that ‘transgenderism’ is a fiction with no basis in science or nature - quite the opposite in fact.
And IF it did exist, it would have been exhibited long ago and in a number sufficient to be recorded by contemporary historians. Note that we are not talking about androgynous behavior or dress by either sex in daily life or as part of cultural celebrations or rituals but of categorical declarations by a man to be a woman and vice versa.
The problem for ‘transgenders’ and their leftist pimps is that even the pro-trans side claim - or admit - that transgenderism is strictly a state of mind and that state can be changed at will.
Contrast this with the gay movement where, despite a long string of failed attempts to uncover a genetic component, they simply claim that ‘I have always been gay (ie from birth) and that can and will never be changed.’
Unfortunately for the Gs and Ts, those two claims contradict each other.
Actually, the 5.7% did not skip the question...They answered, “No, we walk to school...”
Who is saying this? I've never heard anyone except the NY Times and their bleeding-heart sisters make that claim. Did a horde of gender-confused "activists" suddenly descend on America and raise this "critical" issue overnight? Have there been latent legions of pantyhose-wearing stevedores yearning to use the ladies' room all these years?
This is a transparent (!) invented "crisis," a gross exaggeration even for the looney-tune Left.
You would probably get a higher response rate than 1.5% on "are you a potato" or "is your religion Jedi". The few youngsters who identify as "transgender" other than as a prank are mostly the children of social justice warriors who want a trendy boutique kid and don't care any more about the damage than they cared about aborting their first few children.
I am confused. If a boy feels like a girl how does peeing with girls make him safer? Likewise if a girl feels like a boy showering with boys will not keep her safe.
This is really about destroying culture.
If these people are co-equal citizens, how and why are they ‘vulnerable?’
Such a term is actually an unfounded accusation that feral normal people will tear transgenders limb from limb. As we have seen time and again, the already mentally ill are most likely to commit offenses from the mundane (theft, vandalism, public disorder) to the sexual/personal (molestation, grooming, pedophilia, voyeurism, etc.).
When all you have to say is that is how you “feel”, you can brainwash kids until you get 40%.
I’m sure they use the same brainwashing that child molesters use to break down their targets.
Kids are popping up all over claiming to be transgender. It’s a fad now.

you just put down anything because 1) hey its anonymous and 2) nobody cares and 3) this is a joke, so lets treat it as a joke.
1.5% is high, extremely high. It only takes a few goofballs to make that number in any school.

The whole goal of the Obama Transgender Agenda is to condition and mau-mau Americans into accepting the imposition, by beauroctrsict decree and fiat, of insanely irrational, abusive and unpopular laws, regulations and mandates that negatively impact the lives of the majority of Americans for the theoretical benefit of a very tiny minority .
This paves the way for these same bureaucrats to impose even more of the same on the American people to benefit a minority of zero Americans - ie impose a tyrannical form of government on Americans
There’s going be more than you think when hormone filled teen aged boys are told the can shower with the girls.
If they’re “vulnerable,” it’s their own doing. For cripes’ sake, if you’re a man, use the men’s can. If you’re a woman, use the women’s. If you’re a man in drag, go to the bathroom before you go out in public. Better yet, seek help for your mental illness and quit inflicting it on all of us, then insisting that WE’RE the ones in the wrong!

When my kids were in high school, they thought those surveys were a joke and answered accordingly.
