First Lady Michelle Obama: ‘So Many Communities Are Becoming Play Deserts’

(CNSNews.com) – At a summit by the Aspen Institute’s Project Play, first lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday that some U.S. communities are “play deserts,” because they don’t have sufficient opportunities for kids to participate in sports and other outdoor activities, compared to wealthy communities.

“So many communities are becoming play deserts, but in wealthy communities, there is a wealth of resources. You can be in field hockey, or you can learn how to swim. There are aquatic centers and -- I’ve seen the difference. The disparities are amazing to me,” she said.

As CNSNews.com previously reported, the Obama administration coined the phrase “food deserts” to describe an urban area where a significant share of the population lives more than one mile from a grocery store.

Mrs. Obama took part in the 2016 Project Play Summit at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., alongside her brother, Craig Robinson, a college basketball analyst for ESPN. It was hosted by ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon of “Pardon the Interruption.” All three grew up on the South Side of Chicago.

“The “playgrounds” in my neighborhood are paid for by the SID’s or HOAs. Exclusively. The local residents pay for them. We work 8 hours a day, 52 weeks a year, for 30, 40 years or whatever. That is how we can afford them.”

You realize that this is a completely alien concept to many. The money should come from “taxes”...which, of course, a rather high proportion of people don’t actually pay, especially net.

Yeah, Thomas’s are good. We bake them with cheese, tomato, and bacon ... when they’re on sale.

Food deserts are caused by crime, ranging from shoplifting to robbery, and a lack of reliable labor. If corporations, or even mom and pop shops thought that it was possible to make money, there would be no food deserts. The only color involved here is “green”.

Me too, we built forts in the mesquite bushes with tumbleweeds piled up and around. You had to be careful crawling in but it was so good the town drunk often slept there.

“Because those communities destroy play grounds. I have seen it in my small town. Graffiti, broken equipment and the play grounds are only a year or two old. Add to that they are not really usable for children because drug dealers and other undesirables hang out there.”

True - I’d like to ask these Ms.Obama who will take the responsibility of gathering up the used needles and condoms every morning before the kids show up. Or should that be another government job.

In Britain, “food deserts” are white. South Asians (Indian, Pakistani, and variants), Caribbean Islanders, and Africans find their fruits and vegetables and they cook.

“Give us power tools and welders and we are bolting Briggs and Stratton motors into Huffy bikes with bad brakes *wink*”

Brings back memories. Nothin’ like going 40 MPH on a side street riding a 3.5 horsepower stingray bike equipped with a poorly-welded “chopper” fork - with no shocks are very little brakes. The police wouldn’t go after us because they were afraid to. You could go as fast as you had guts.

We made a treehouse the city wanted a building permit for.
It had carpet remnants, was sided with aluminum siding remnants.

I think the family turned us in because we killed that grand old cherry tree. :(

Yup. Played mostly in the street or my own back yard. I lived in a small town in north east NJ.

Back in 1992 I was stationed in the DC area. We found a nice home being built in a very rural area about 35 miles south of the Beltway. The home we bought is in a very small HOA (I hate HOAs but didn't have the time to find other decent homes without one) and it had a small playground.

Several years later, as the area became built up a Section 8 housing development was built about four blocks from all of our nice homes.

Since I was on the HOA Board of Directors I would inspect the comon areas every week just to make sure things were good and to see what needed to be done. After the Section 8 town homes were built I started finding used condoms laying around the playground and then finally started finding used needles from drug usage. I got the Board and the residents to approve the dismantlement of the playground and we planted a bunch of trees in place of the equipment.

You can't have anything nice once the thugs start to invade.

Play is for developing free thinking and imagination, not to mention inspiration and happiness. Take away kid's play and you take away their soul's development.

Post of the year!

This needs to be placed, in one foot high lettering, at the entrance to every public school and Board of Education meeting room and office in the USA.

I truly believe that the time off during the Summer months allowing children to play and think freely is why the USA is the most inventive country in the world.

People can't let their kids play outside in many communities because they are surrounded by hate-filled, racist, rabid sub-humans like Michelle Obama.

My dad was XO of 32nd St Naval Station from 1970 to 1977. I finished junior high to grad school in that interval. Dad and I redesigned part of the pool filter pumps and pipes for the pool at Admiral Baker field. Pumps were starved as originally installed.

They called Southwestern College “TCU” for Telegraph Canyon University, and “USD” stood for University of Spoiled Daughters.
