First Lady Michelle Obama: ‘So Many Communities Are Becoming Play Deserts’

(CNSNews.com) – At a summit by the Aspen Institute’s Project Play, first lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday that some U.S. communities are “play deserts,” because they don’t have sufficient opportunities for kids to participate in sports and other outdoor activities, compared to wealthy communities.

“So many communities are becoming play deserts, but in wealthy communities, there is a wealth of resources. You can be in field hockey, or you can learn how to swim. There are aquatic centers and -- I’ve seen the difference. The disparities are amazing to me,” she said.

As CNSNews.com previously reported, the Obama administration coined the phrase “food deserts” to describe an urban area where a significant share of the population lives more than one mile from a grocery store.

Mrs. Obama took part in the 2016 Project Play Summit at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., alongside her brother, Craig Robinson, a college basketball analyst for ESPN. It was hosted by ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon of “Pardon the Interruption.” All three grew up on the South Side of Chicago.

The desert was my favorite place to play. More whining we need to get over.

There is nothing stopping parents in these desert communities from creating street games.

One of my church friends who volunteers at a school in the slums tried to get Police Activities League sports started for the children, but the adults don’t want to associate with the police.

When I was younger walking more than a mile to the grocery store was a form of play and exercise.

I remember living in Bucks County right across the Delaware river from Trenton.

We volunteered and built a beautiful playground. It was really amazing. You could see Trenton from the play ground.

When the FSA thugs across the river found about it - they brought their FSA thugs in training to play there.

The play ground was destroyed in a few months.

There is a reason a certain class of democrat voters can’t have nice things.

The White Crib turned into an ethics, morals, and transparency desert, so what’s her point?

Ummm...my neighborhood has no playground, unless you call “the street” the playground. We need some “investment”.

When I was kid, we played ball in the street. We skated on the ice on the street in the winter.

The cops would come and tell us go to the park, but we said it was too far.

Those were some great street soft ball games.

Your mother would be arrested for that today.

We “played” outdoors within shouting distance of the ranch house-no investment, project or instructors-just trees, grass, space and an imagination-that is still what kids out here do-they just go down the road to each other’s homes-no “play date” required...

Maybe if someone would clear the drug dealers out of the city parks, the kids could go there and actually have a safe place to play without being told how to do it...

Maybe kids can’t play because the parks are full of junkies and gang bangers.

Here's what happened.....some geniuses who write education policy identified a problem That is that in most poor and fragile neighborhoods (particularly black ones) students don't do as well as students in wealthier and more stable environments

Did they instill more rigid discipline, have enrichment activities, and have expectations that were reasonable considering ethnicity, education and income level of parents, aptitude, and cultural expectiations? Did they work with the community to develop role models and praise supportive parents? No. They closed the neighborhood schools, put the kids on busses, and shipped them far away from home. Guess what? Most of those parents can't easily get to those new schools, and the children can't stick around for activities beyond their bus ride. They don't get to use the school facilities when the day is over.

Meanwhile, their neighborhoods have become playground deserts. Why? When the neighborhood school is closed, it takes away the neighborhood playground, the neighborhood auditorium, sometimes the neighborhood library, and the place where the parents got to know one another. It takes away the place where a child could excel within their community.

Genius, absolute genius. (sarcasm). So I'd say Michelle is correct, but the policies the feds DEMANDED caused the problem!

Well, that’s a lie.

The skate parks, splash pads, pools, etc are being placed in the low wealth sections of our city.

City and County politicians are very careful to place it where the loudest voices are.
