Trump and Sanders whip up debate buzz (Trump: will donate debate fee to women's charity...<snicker>)
The Hill ^

Posted on 05/27/2016 6:46:08 AM PDT by quesney

Trump priced the debate, saying it would generate somewhere between $10 million and $15 million, and he suggested a women’s health organization should receive the money.

Your concern is duly noted. Trump has continuously for the past almost 12 months taken risks deemed by most to be foolhardly and he’s still standing. I don’t see this one as particularly worse than the ones that have before, and the upsides are many.

Are you talking about Planned Parenthood? If they get money from this, it’s not “nitpicking,” but rather an atrocity.

And I fear that’s what may happen, given Trump’s previous praise.

There are plenty out there and most will have some facet that "isn't acceptable" to one faction or another. You make my point by picking out PP and ignoring that he said he wants to defund the abortion department but that there were others that, not only had the infrastructure in place which had other functions that didn't deal with abortion and had viable utility.

I hate PP and would protest a direct donation to the place that allowed them to us money for abortion.

His praise was not for PP as a whole - it was that they had other services that dealt with women's health issues.

It's hard for me to separate them in my head but that doesn't mean they are inseparable.

My own opinion is that the infrastructure should stay for cost-effective utilization but the staffing/management should be changed to foster actual moral medical health issues.

So many have "put words or other than intended meanings" into Trump's actual words and intentions it's insane. As time goes on and he starts to go further in-depth about his polices, most of those "concerns" have been debunked.

Note that his sister was not on the list of proposed SCOTUS replacements for Alito......

There are a bunch of ways Trump could make sure the debate never happens without actually being seen as the one who backed out. I think that is the most likely scenario, because Trump has already received most of the benefit he is likely to receive - just by accepting the challenge, he has gotten a bunch of PR, people trying to figure out just how clever he is, he marginalizes Clinton, offers to raise money for women’s health, makes the point again that he can draw ratings and dictate terms to the media. Looks fearless. All that without even setting foot on the debate stage.

If he does actually do the debate, I’m almost positive he will be extremely nice and flatter Bernie, even when Bernie attacks Trump viciously (which he will). Trump knows there are a bunch of #neverHillary type Bernie supporters watching who will vote for Trump or stay home and who would not want to see their guy get trounced, so Trump won’t try.

Instead of fighting back he’ll ignore any attacks and insults and sympathize with him about various things - the super delegates are rigged against him, Hillary is under the control of her big banker donors, etc. Lobbyists and corrupt corporations control DC, etc, etc. The closest Trump will get to a criticism of Bernie would be to say he should have hit her on the email scandal.

Trump also has the option of coming right out and saying “I am not here to fight with Senator Sanders, I just did this to make Hillary look bad”. Everyone will laugh and by doing that he would basically be ‘throwing’ the debate and thus inoculate himself against the media saying he lost.

There are so many ways Trump can work this to his advantage, and I’m sure he’ll do just that.

It’s what he does.

It doesn’t matter if you can separate them in your head. It matters that they’re not separate in the Planned Parenthood budget. A donation to PP supports abortion, period.

Not sure what Trump’s sister has to do with Justice Alito and hope you aren’t suggesting that Trump would try to impeach him.

“There are so many ways Trump can work this to his advantage, and I’m sure he’ll do just that.”

I don’t think anyone has mentioned the most important thing: who will moderate this debate? For decades the stupid party agreed to let demonrat partisans moderate all debates.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Will Trump insist on an appropriate moderator, or will he allow the forces of evil to pick someone like Bernardine Dohrn?

It’s not a little gain. It will be a substantial problem for Hillary and will stick to the bottom of her shoes like a big was of gum.

I agree - allowing the moderators to be openly antagonistic is another stupid thing Republicans do.

This is another way Trump can make this debate not happen if he so wishes - he can simply say $15 million goes to pro life groups and specify Shawn Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Lou Dobbs, etc. as the moderators. Bernie would never agree to the terms.

Trump is not going to debate Bernie saying it seemed inappropriate to debate the “second place finisher”.

Evidently the upsides were not sufficient to warrant the risk. Wisdom prevailed.

Trump decided not to do the debate. Good decision in my humble opinion.

He is trusting his base ...you and I...to stand with him as he adds to that base. Come on supporters, where is your confidence and trust in your man? He’s going to be making bigger decisions than this over much more important issues as President of the United States and you fear to trust him with a debate against a socialist?

I suspect that part of it is that we’ve watched with horror and gloom as ever since 1992 the candidate has been bowled over again and again and again, or worse, stabbed us in the back. I guess people just come to expect that kind of betrayal, you know?

Trump just needs to play the “sympathizer” and he’ll get half of the Bernie bros and another 1/4 will stay home. Checkmate.

The lack of trust and confidence in Trump among his supporters is surprising.

Its not that at all. He has shown himself to be a formidable debater. We all know that. But just because you're a champion you don't waste your energy, talent and prestige on upstarts. Its just common sense and Trump himself came to that conclusion. He said it was "inappropriate", something a lot of us were trying to say on this thread.

Really, this debate is a no- brainer

Evidently Trump disagrees with you.

Wow! Are you ever in the low-info category. Thank you for saving me the time of further debate. Alito died sometime ago and the Dems have been trying to push an Obama nominee.

Months ago, Trump quipped that he might consider his sister, who is a judge, for the Supreme Court. She is not the type of conservative judge we want and he did not include her on his prospective list despite some folks untoward fears.

It's obvious you run off of emotions instead of actual data so i won't bother trying to explain anything else.

By the way - you also said: It doesn’t matter if you can separate them in your head. It matters that they’re not separate in the Planned Parenthood budget. A donation to PP supports abortion, period.

I bet you pulled those numbers out your butt because I know you never checked.

PP budget shows 3% going towards abortions and about 10% of its customers get abortions. It is still an atrocity but having ignorant folks spout false statistics does no good.

G'Day mate.....

Before you accuse someone of being in “the low-info category”, you might want to fact check your own post. Justice Samuel Alito is very much alive. Perhaps you are confusing Alito with Antonin Scalia?

As to the PP budget – only 3% going towards abortions – that is a lie and you know it.

Yep- I stepped all over it with the Alito thing - realized i had it wrong shortly after pushing the "Post" button.

I will apologize for that part of it, but despite the 3% being off, the point was that they do have a budget separated by the various agencies.

The bit about Trump's sister was to demonstrate that sometimes he's speaking tongue-in-cheek but when it comes down to serious business, Trump is all business and not the threat that so many try to make of him. Every day he seems to be coming out with more issue-based policies/directions he would like to go in and he has put out far more than any other candidate I can recall at this point in time.

Jedidiah - sorry about the Alito bit - i stepped in it big time. As far as the rest, that's my sorry and I'm sticking to it.

Trump thinks so. No doubt that’s who he has in mind! We actually had a constitutional conservative running for the GOP nomination, but instead we get Trump. We must be out of our freaking minds!

Well, at least he walked back the Alito part, but stuck to his “sorry” that I’m ignorant and blowing things out of my butt.

At some point, he may realize that he’s wrong about a lot of other things, too.
