Gingrich: Trump's attacks on judge 'unacceptable'
The Hill ^ | June 4, 2016 | Evelyn Rupert

Posted on 06/04/2016 7:30:13 PM PDT by maggief

Donald Trump supporter and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich isn't on board with Trump's attacks on a federal judge.

“I don’t know what Trump’s reasoning was, and I don’t care,” Gingrich said in an email to the Washington Post. “His description of the judge in terms of his parentage is completely unacceptable.”

Trump has continually bashed U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing lawsuits over Trump's real estate education program Trump University. Trump claims that because Curiel is of Mexican descent, he is inherently biased against him and should recuse himself. Curiel was born in Indiana to immigrant parents.

Alberto Gonzalez, the first HISPANIC ATTORNEY GENERAL in US history, says otherwise.

The Code of Conduct for United States Judges, which states explicitly that “Canon 2: A Judge Should Avoid Impropriety and the Appearance of Impropriety in All Activities.” It isn’t necessary that the judge is actually behaving with impropriety. It is sufficient that his conduct appears improper, something that impairs confidence in the judiciary as a whole, regardless of the judge’s actual motives and conduct... Here’s why Newt causes some to question his being the VP nod. You just never know when he’s going to say something like this.

Alberto Gonzoles has said that it is entirely appropriate for Trump to question the judge’s heritage, connections, etc. If the judge is a member of LaRaza (or whatever it’s called) then he should not be on this case.

Meet shot his mouth off without knowing the facts. Scratch him from the VP list, if he was ever on it.

I guess Curiel being a member of La RAZA ( the race) and working on their legal team pro -bono does not give him a bias Newt?
you are wrong
Donald is right and you would have been an excellent VP but probably just pooched your shot...so good luck

Dear Newt. Judge Curiel is associated with La Raza. THAT makes the difference. His sympathies are not with his country of birth if he’s with La Raza. He needs recuse himself, and let another judge handle the case.

Alberto Gonzalez disagrees with Gingrich.

Did Trump mention the judge’s LA raza connection at the same time as the Mexican comment ?

There’s definitely some shenanigans going on there with the unredacted stuff.

Mind you though, this is not going to help Trump, and a good counter of scummy actions by the opposition will be needed, even so, it’s disheartening.

The judge is a La Raza supporter, and also an illegal supporter. Newt needs to get his facts straight!

What we commonly call La Raza is formally the National Council of La Raza.

Curiel is a member of a “La Raza” attorneys’ association.

Depending on who you ask, yes they are or no they are not connected.

Newt turning on Trump. Maybe found out he’s not going to be VP. I see it as a clear conflict of interest.
