Makes sense considering how the F-35 has been performing and the insane cost of coming up with a true F-22 follow-on. Without the F-22, we lose air superiority fast and leave the F-35 to be swept up by the various Su-27 variants.

How is it the most lethal fighter if it hasn’t been tested in combat?

The big brains at the Pentagon finally figured out that the F-35 is no good?

One of two things will happen. Either Lockheed Martin will drag their feet on this and give all sorts of reasons why it can’t be done, because they can make more money off the F-35. Or Lockheed Martin will use it as an excuse to charge more for each F-22, because they need to reopen the line, as well as charging more for the F-35, because of a lower buy and the fact that the line they had planned to use is now building the F-22.

I thought this was the most lethal plane.

Bloody hell ... we should have about 500 of these things, and trickle production to keep the line open. I know: they’re not cheap. I don’t really care which welfare schemes or entitlement programs have to be eliminated to pay for it.

Make an updated version of the P-51. Give it the Hogs Gatling teeth, make it carrier capable, with new radar, and call it The SHARK

The F-35: not a fighter, but a mechanism to move money from the tax coffers to the Military Industrial complex so it can trickle down to complicit congressmen and military leaders.

Another couple trillion dollars and a few more decades might bring us the F35.
I worked on one military contract. Once it gets out to field testing every single general has to piss all over the project and get his little “improvement” mandated. So by the time it even gets back to testing again it is so completely over built, over designed, overly complicated, and over budget it gets scrapped. Stick with what works.

YES! This has been an obvious move for years!
I hope they also produce a “stretch” version with zero, one or two seats and room for more internal fuel and weapons.

No, that is foolish to think.
We are fundamentally flawed and it is too late to recover.
