Florida police search for child who was attacked by alligator at Disney resort

Authorities in Florida said at a news conference Wednesday they are still searching for a child who was attacked and dragged into the water by an alligator at a Disney resort.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jeff Williamson said authorities plan to continue searching the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney World’s The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and said it’s still a search and rescue operation.

Williamson said the 2-year-old boy was playing at the edge of the shoreline of the lagoon when the alligator came up and attacked the boy. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said earlier that the boy’s family is from Nebraska and they were on vacation with their three children at the resort when the alligator attacked.

Demings said the father had entered the water and tried to grab the child from the reptile, but was unsuccessful. The parents quickly alerted a lifeguard that an alligator had attacked the boy.

Were people at Disney aware there were gators in the lake ? Were there warning signs posted at the lake . News reports say that the child and his father were dangling their feet in the water at the edge of the lake . Something is wrong with this picture .

NEVER NEVER NEVER allow a small child to play at the edge of any body of water in Florida. That goes for small pets as well.

There are gators in practically every lake in Florida. Certainly one the size of the Seven Seas Lagoon will have them.

So it would have been common knowledge at the hotel.

There are no swimming signs posted everywhere. I don’t know if they have anything specifically warning of gators though.

And keep them away from ape zoo enclosures. This is the 2nd time in a month that something bad has happened because the parents let the kid loose. Maybe they figured this was safer, but even so at 2 there’s also just plain drowning danger. I don’t get it.

There are gators in ponds where I live in Florida.
It is irresponsible to let a child anywhere near a pond in FL, GA & SC. I have run into gators while playing golf in SC. If my ball goes in the water, I never try to retrieve it.

Disney has signs posted about alligators around all the lakes and ponds. Our resort had a walkway and gazebo over one pond with signs that clearly stated that there were alligators in the pond and to keep all small children and pets clear of the waters edge. It also said Please do not feed the alligators.

Standard run of events in situation such as this here in Florida is that the gator pushes the body under an underwater log for about a week until it begins to putrefy, and then eats some of it.

Remains bloat and float to the surface in about a week to 10 days.

Very “not nice” but reality.

They are from Nebraska. Probably didn’t expect an alligator to come up on the shore and grab their baby.

There are gators in virtually every lake in Florida. We get one a year in our little one acre “designer pond.” Lake Monroe, 20 miles north of Disney, has an estimated 2500 to 4000.

Have been to The Mouse hundreds of times (annual pass). Can not remember a gator warning sign.

Even worse, gator ares now interbreeding with crocodiles that were never seen here before and the result is a much more aggressive, dangerous and larger reptile.

We are also now getting a new, very aggressive 4-foot long land-dwelling reptile in the Miami and Tampa areas.

(Problems with interbreeding: Think Obama)

Litigation, OMG!

And, they were watching fireworks so I would assume their heads were looking skyward. Never saw that stealthy gator coming.

Prayers to all.
