DOH! Anybody smell a law suit for unlawful termination? I wouldn't put it past the genteel snowflakes.

“We were shocked. The proposal was written professionally like examples I have learned about in school...”

Now you’ve learned that the real world isn’t a college campus.

The reality is that colleges -- the educational institutions that are theoretically supposed to prepare these kids for the real world -- did these students a disservice by treating every petition or pet cause as valid, allowing the inmates to run the asylum. When the students hit the real world, WHAM!

Yeah, and so did the parents who tolerate this kind of crap from their kids. I love to see the faces of the "everyone's-a-winner" generation when they actually have to support themselves. If everyone's a winner, then why did you just get fired? The real world doesn't work the way you were raised...get used to it.

Go do that at MCRD. See what happens. Let me know when and which depot, I’ll see if I can pull some strings so I can be a fly on the wall. I want to see this. I’ll tell the Senior that I’m okay with anything he does, and I didn’t see a damned thing.

Interns ‘petitioning’ to change their work environment.

Well, you’ve learned something. so I guess you have that.

California has “employment at will” which means the employer does not even need to give a reason for terminating somebody.

Of course that doesn’t mean former employees won’t try—race, color, age, sexual orientation, physical/mental disabilities might be alleged.

Employers are advised by their HR departments to document, document, warn, document, etc.

Earlier thread: I was fired from my internship for writing a proposal for a more flexible dress code

(I'm just linking to another thread that's had over 100 posts. This post isn't at all some "already posted!!!!" complaint. Even if I tended to complain, that earlier thread has a different source and a significantly different title.)

Even though they were just interns I guarantee you some of them made phone calls to see if what happened to them was legal!

"They can do that?"

Note to intern: before trying such stunts in the future, be aware of importance that key stakeholders may place on your "proposals" to them. No matter how carefully thought-out and well-reasoned your arguments may be, once you put something into writing and drop it on someone's desk, there's no reeling it back in.

In the future, consider floating your proposals in what some like to call a "trial balloon." Have a chit-chat with a seasoned confidant, perhaps your intern mentor over lunch. Make some harmless small talk about the weather, the local ball team, a project you heard about going on in the company, etc.

If you get the feeling that you're in a "safe space" with that confidant, ask them how a proposal such as yours would land with management. If they're vaguely in agreement, ask about the best way to make that proposal and what the best timing would be.

If the company is undergoing some financial storms, or if the company is coming off a bad quarter or two, unless your proposal contains an immediate payback with zero cost, you'd better zip it. Just because you learned how to draft a "business memorandum" in your Effective Communications' course doesn't mean your boss will see it that way.

Probably saw nothing wrong with drafting and circulating the petition on the clock. The snowflakes are going to have a much tougher time paying back their student loans than anyone imagines.

I have never had a job before (I’ve always focused on school) and I was hoping to gain some experience before I graduate next year.

Mission accomplished then.

Oh the graduation commencement speech I would give!

Dear Graduates of this fine institution, Welcome to the real world. Now you education just begins.

First, you must learn that nobody gives a damn how you feel.
Second, you must learn that the BOSS may not always be right, but he’s the BOSS.
Thirdly, your sole responsibility is to make the BOSS happy.
Fourthly, and finally, you will learn that if you do not pay attention to the first three rules, you will be unemployed with no pay.

Have a nice life!.......................

I use to be a Bookseller at Barnes & Noble back in the 90's. They had a dress code. My manager (a very nice lady) hired me on the spot because I showed up for my interview wearing my good Brooks Brothers suit.

She's long since gone unfortunately and the Booksellers look like they just walked in from a homeless camp.

One other thing. No one was allowed any facial piercings ;-)

At-will workers can be fired at-will if the company doesn't like them. Doesn't need to be a reason. Especially if they are still in some probationary period. At least that's they way it was when I was working for others.

But I come from that world one sees in the rear view mirror. What do I know?
