Sanders delegates shocked they need cash for DNC trip
The New York Post ^ | 7/4/2015 | Mary Kay Linge

Some of Bernie Sanders’ 1,831 New York delegates can’t scrape up enough cash to attend this month’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia — so they’ve turned to crowdfunding websites to raise the cash.

“The cost definitely was a surprise,” said Jessica Frisco, 23, a delegate from the Upper West Side. “People are freaking out.”

Unlike the savvy operators who usually win slots as convention delegates, some from Sanders’ campaign say they had no idea they would have to spend up to $5,000 on travel expenses.

That isn't one of the poorer sections of Manhattan.

Nope nothing wrong with raising extra money, the stupidity is thinking it was going to be free and waiting until the last minute to figure it out. Not to mention the fact that Bernie has been eliminated and it is a fruitless effort(well a few fruits will be there).

Classic Liberal Miscalculation.

I don't see an issue with this. Why should it be expected that delegates must be affluent?

Check your notions.

Since when does it cost $5,000 to go from New York City to Philadelphia?

Much of that price is the convention fee itself.

I was invited some years ago to be a delegate at the RNC convention. IIRC, it was $2000 just to attend the convention. That did not include hotel and travel costs.

I did not go because of the expense.

What’s worthy of scorn is that they need up to $5,000 for travel expenses from NY to Philly. What’s wrong with taking the bus or carpooling and living in tents, if they’re really that broke?

As someone said in an earlier post, the stupidity was in not doing better planning. Had they managed this appropriately, they could have coordinated with local Philadelphia groups to provide homes to take them in - or even liberal churches to put them up for the duration of the convention at no cost, maybe even with school buses to bring them to the location of the event.

Crowdfunding (whatever that is) could have been used much further in advance to take care of the admission costs.

Like I said, had these yahoos had the wherewithal, this could have been handled - but then, they’re Bernie supporters who assumed (remember the definition of “assumed”) it was all free.

No, you do not have it correct? How would someone not know at this late date that they were not getting a free ticket to the convention along with free housing and meals? They can raise money anyway they want, but they need to know that it is a personal responsibility to get there, be there, and stay there.

That would do it. Then stage a protest outside that the mean ol' dems won't let them in because the registration fee is fascist, or whatever.

Today's protestors would make terrible hippies. No imagination, no willingness to escape the matrix.

And yet, some a-holes will be right there, writing checks, so the BernieDroids can attack the RNC in Cleveland.

Why should it be expected that delegates must be affluent?

I was making an observation and not a judgment.

Delegates are usually appointed as a reward to the individuals who have provided leadership and support to the candidate. Typically an individual of that young age would have been a line volunteer not a leader.

Also it should be noted that the fact that the individual quoted in the article can not afford the trip. So it can be almost considered an imposition on the young person to appoint her to be a delegate.

This young person may be put in the position of maxing out her credit cards to attend the convention or not going. Personally I think wiser heads should have advised her to decline the honor.

The little snowflakes expect the red carpet treatment, the best rooms in the best hotels, expensive champaigne, limo rides to and from all the best parties etc.

I know a few people that are attending as delegates and listened in on a conversation as people very much in the political know asked them, "you mean you have to pay your own way?" If you are new to the process, there are things you find out, sometimes late in the game. I think yours is an overly harsh position.

That said, on the inability to think, lack of personal responsibility of some people and the entitlement mind set, I am with you. It is shocking.

Sounds like Bernie has his own share of “low information” voters.
