Dallas Sniper Rifle Controversy: Who Knows the Rifle?

Dallas Shooting Rifle Controversy

There is considerable controversy and confusion about the firearms used in the Dallas sniper attack against police officers.  Early in the aftermath, numerous disarmist pundits proclaimed that it was an AR15 rifle, without any substantive verification of any kind.  One of them was the “gun guy” on the Huffington Post.  Another was Dallas Mayor (D) Mike Rawlings.  From newswest9.com:

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says the suspect in the sniper slayings of five officers used an AR-15 rifle. Rawlings said that’s the type of weapon 25-year-old Micah Johnson used in the attack Thursday night in downtown Dallas. A similar assault weapon was used in the attacks at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that killed 49 people.

Early reports are often wrong.  It is common for politically motivated individuals to put out false reports in an attempt to hijack the narrative. A couple of days later, many major news outlets were citing sources that the rifle used was an SKS. Some were from authoritative sources. From nytimes.com:

“It’s talking not only about how to kill but how to keep from being killed,” said Clay Jenkins, Dallas County’s chief executive and director of homeland security and emergency management, who said he had not read the original journal but had reviewed summaries of it. “It shows that he’s well prepared.”

(snip)

Mr. Jenkins said Mr. Johnson had used a semiautomatic SKS rifle and a high-capacity handgun. He drove his vehicle to the demonstration and parked it, Mr. Jenkins said, but was on foot at many points throughout the attack.

Another statement from Chief Executive Officer and Judge Clay Jenkins throws a bit more information into the mix. From sunny1015.com:

Saiga 5.45x39. AK-74 variant with Magpul furniture, red dot sight. 30 rd mag. About a $650 rifle. Nothing special. Can't import them anymore after Obama banned the imports.

Why is there so much intrigue when it comes to these mass murderers?

And the biggest questions never get answered.

For instance at Sandy Hook, how come we never got a straight answer re: the loon that lived next door and professed to have had 10 of the kids in his house for 4 hours after the shooting. He nearly delighted in spoon feeding the media with what it wanted to hear re: the anti gun agenda. Of course, it never happened. He never had all those kids in his house for all those hours.

Rifle in the rubble is an AK variant, usually called a Saiga, note the stamped metal receiver and the standard AK magazine. The Saiga is a civilianized AK, they cover up the gas tube above the barrel that most AK’s leave exposed. The rifles pictured on left are SKS’s, they do fire the same 7.62 x 39 round as most AK’s. SKS’s, unless modified, have a fixed magazine.

You make a good point.

I would like to know the answer to your question about the kids. Probably a political activist sensing an opportunity.

Actually, the magazine looks more like the magazine for the 5.56 x45 Nato version of the Saiga but its hard to tell from the angle

It's a fully semiautomatic Webley-Vickers, belt-fed with a cop-killing bayonet lug and a Hubble telescopic sight. I've use mine to shoot through the center of the earth and pick off kangaroos in Australia.

Why yes, I'm the firearms consultant for CNN. How did you know?

I read somewhere on an earlier thread that it was indeed an AK variant (Russian Saiga) chambered for the 5.45x39 (AK-74 cartridge).

Obama can ban imports but Trump can't. Cool. All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than other animals.
