Poll: Clinton struggles to make inroads with young Americans

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton is struggling to make inroads among young Americans who overwhelmingly supported Bernie Sanders during the Democratic presidential primary, a worrisome sign as she tries to reassemble the coalition that twice propelled Barack Obama into the White House.

Opinions of Clinton among young Americans vary by race and ethnicity, according to a new GenForward poll of adults ages 18 to 30. The majority of the nation's younger blacks and Asian-Americans have a favorable impression of Clinton, but the presumptive Democratic nominee struggles with whites and Hispanics.

Just 26 percent of young whites and 49 percent of Hispanics have a positive opinion of the former secretary of state. Both groups overwhelmingly say she is not trustworthy.

"I just don't see her being honest and straightforward," said Alexander Tomas, an 18-year-old Hispanic from Fort Worth, Texas. A recent high school graduate, Tomas supported Sanders in the state's Democratic primary, but says he's now undecided about his choice in November's general election.

GenForward is a survey by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The first-of-its-kind poll pays special attention to the voices of young adults of color, highlighting how race and ethnicity shape the opinions of the country's most diverse generation.

The survey polled all young adults, not necessarily registered or likely voters, but the findings suggest Clinton may struggle to turn out people 18 to 30 to support her candidacy. While Clinton emerged victorious in her unexpectedly tough primary with Sanders, the contest revealed a stunning weakness with such young voters

Interesting they didn’t mention Trump. I bet he came out pretty well in this.

If what you say is true, do not be surprised and do not panic if Trump floats some un-Conservative trial balloon about helping them pay for college.

It’s smart politics.

“Easily reversed once she fully embraces the Free College Scam.”

Mixed bag, IMHO. Those old enough to vote include many who have already gone into debt for college, and who won’t be too happy to have to pay for those who won’t have to pay. Those young enough to benefit are too young to vote.

Absolutely concur with your post, Buckeye McFrog.

That is the wonderful thing about being Hillary Clinton.
She can make "more free stuff" promises to college-age voters.
She has her billions via the Clinton Foundation so she and her family are fine...regardless of what happens to the country.
Republican messaging is more sophisticated and cannot be done in a brainless 15-second soundbite.

Young people don't want a wrinkly old commie hag lecturing them with warmed over totalitarian ideas and slogans.

Young people will come around once they get to know her. Her dulcet voice, wizened hands, and loving eyes reveal the true beauty of Hillary.

Shit, Huma Abedin just hacked my account.

And when at the end of the day she can’t deliver on her Free College promises she can go to the old standby and blame EEEEEEEEVIL Republicans for that.

You disappoint me, my friend. She's going to promise to forgive those loans too. Realtors and car dealers will stand up and cheer. A veritable golden age! They'll be crawling over broken glass to go and vote for it.

IMHO she's going to promise a major boost in Social Security benefits too to get the old folks on board. That will only leave people like me (around 50, already paid off my school loans) standing out in the cold.

Remember that episode of The Sopranos when Tony's kid was forced to go visit his grandmother as part of his punishment for misbehavior?

Hillary is that grandmother and they just don't want to be around her.

Similar to your graphics, my hope is when people are in the privacy of the voting booth, they do the CORRECT thing for our country.
They should pull the lever for President Donald Trump. My belief is he is far more popular than the polls indicate.

His calm yet patriotic supporters do not wish to deal with screaming, frothing, and unhinged liberals...so they quietly go about their business.
This is hands-down the most important election of our lifetimes.

That is about as insightful as saying that she doesn’t appear to be over seven feet tall.
