CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sen. Sherrod Brown has joined the call for Gov. John Kasich to suspend Ohio's open carry law during the Republican National Convention this week.

"I would hope that the governor would listen to the police union and suspend conceal and open carry in Ohio, in Cleveland, during this convention," Brown said in an appearance in Cincinnati, as reported by BuzzFeed.

"I know the governor could call a hurried special session, get the legislature to Columbus, like, tonight or tomorrow and do this."

Brown echoed the sentiments of Cleveland police union chief Steve Loomis, who has made his plea to Kasich in numerous TV interviews the last two days.

"It is irresponsible if he doesn't try to help us,'' Loomis told The Plain Dealer on Sunday. "Every single person should demand it. Police are being ambushed and murdered."

Kasich's spokeswoman, Emmalee Kalmbach, said the governor does not have the authority to suspend state and federal laws regarding open carry.

"Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights or state laws as suggested. The bonds between our communities and police must be reset and rebuilt, as we're doing in Ohio, so our communities and officers can be safe.''

Article 1 of the Ohio Constitution specifically limits the right to suspend laws to the legislature: "No power of suspending laws shall ever be exercised, except by the general assembly."

I’m not impressed with Sherrod Brown’s knowledge of the Constitution, or his intelligence. As anyone can see, both are suspect.

I trust after 0bama, you in Cayuga co. are not stuck on stupid. (Did you hear that 0bama phone lady?).

Agreed. My wife and her family are from the Cleveland area and I ALWAYS carry there. We won’t be in Cleveland this week, but we will be at Put In Bay and, given what happened a year ago at Put In Bay, I’ll be strapping more than my pocket gun this weekend.

I think Kasich should suspend the law preventing us from executing the family members of congressmen and senators who propose unconstitutional acts. Corruption of blood, the constitution calls it....

It could be real handy too if we can torture them until they confess to treason. Suspend the Fifth Amendment while we're at it.....

I totally understand that Kasich can’t just suspend the law of open carry.

However, I’ve never heard a reasonable answer to the question of “Why are they allowed to suspend open carry in the restricted zone that includes the venue and perimeter?”

Did the law have to be suspended for that? Or is it because it’s “private property” versus “public property?” I have no idea if the arena is private, I’m just asking because I’ve wondered about it.

These Libs love to strip the law abiding citizens of their constitutional rights. Open carry is great,I wish it was legal in New York State.

Oh, no doubt! People who shoot cops will go watch Ghostbusters instead if you just make it illegal to carry a gun.

I’m all for allowing citizens to arm themselves, don’t get me wrong, but I’m afraid if they’re allowed to bring guns into the convention some nut might shoot Donald.

Senator Brown (D) Ohio graduated from Yale in 1974. He was elected to the Ohio legislature in 1974. AFAIK, he has been in elected office for virtually his entire adult life.

He is on Hillary’s short list for VP.
