It says a lot about Donald Trump that his children are such delightful people, even though they were raised with the "disadvantage" of being very wealthy, Ben Carson said Thursday.
"All of the Trump children are absolutely delightful people. And I think that speaks volumes about the man," he said, referring to the GOP nominee.
"Anybody who can raise children, particularly in the environment they came up in, which I think is a disadvantaged environment. Because I know a lot of people who are very rich and their kids are so spoiled, and I think it's a disadvantage. I really do," he added.
Carson, who became a Trump surrogate after dropping out of the 2016 Republican primary in March, made the remarks as he spoke on Fox News.

Ben, of course, is right about that.
Most people envy the situation and don’t see it as a disadvantage, but far too many billionaire offspring end up as miserable, druggy do- and know-nothings—as well as politically addlepated.

Unless there is an evidence to show that the kids of “billionaires and millionaires” are more prone to bad behavior than the lower/poor classes, it is just selection bias. And plain class warfare.

Why do you think the nobility of old had such complex rules of etiquette and what we now would call “frivolous” recreation?
Idleness leads to bad decisions. It’s not the fact of being rich per se, it’s the resources they have at their disposal and convenience of NOT having to work to keep them occupied.
Until the welfare state and socialism reared its ugly head, this was mostly something rich (or middle class) people could afford.
Anecdotally, I must agree! Having dated, socialized with, and managed an, admittedly, small number of rich individuals (including multimillionaire "Trust Fund Babies"), I found the vast majority to be vacuous, lacking in empathy and, generally unhappy people!
I totally understand what Carson is saying. I know of many who have never had to want for anything who were ruined by their wealth. Never being told no and being raised to think someone will always clean up your messes can be disastrous to a person.

This is just class envy. It’s sets up the premise that wealth is some sort of destroyer. I’d be the first to agree it can be, but take a look at Trump’s kids and tell me it has to be.
He raised some fine kids there, and he’s as wealthy as it gets. (relatively speaking, the lower class and the wealthy)
There are disadvantages, and there are advantages.
What normal child is following their dad around on national and international ventures, and becoming heir apparent to this type of an estate?
When you start making blanket judgements, you quickly entrap yourself in some obvious exceptions.
Trump’s kids did not suffer any ill effects.
People with a lot less in life, have had to endure anything they have.
I say kudos to their dad and them. Couldn’t be happier for them and the nation.
Selection bias doesn’t pertain here. I’m pretty sure Carson isn’t referring to an advantage over the poor, but rather over the middle.
And it is a simple observation of human nature in different situations.

The nobility of old might have frivolous recreation, but the lower classes of the olde were living in filth and dying of plague on a daily basis. To them, simple act of washing hands was considered “frivolous”.
This demonization of wealthy lead to Marxism in the late 19th century. This continues to this day even among “conservatives”. Why can’t you be content with attacking the parasitic takers, not those whose investment RUN everything.
Yep—people, like plants and to a degree animals, need to face natural elements in order to grow up strong and straight.
Most parents are tempted to spoil their kids, and the rich simply have fewer constraints against doing so.
It wasn’t, you implied such.
A rich man is the same as a poor man essentially. The difference is the amount of resources they have at their disposal.
Poor people struggle to survive, and as a result are preoccupied to an extent that limits their ability to engage in vice. Rich people have resources and do not need to engage in this, leading to idleness without something to keep vice in check.
That is not Marxism by any stretch.
A respected author (whose name I can’t recall) wrote a book about the children of the rich years back, and his conclusion was that many of them were just as psychologically disadvantaged as the children of the poor.
Many of the “rich” children are raised, not by their parents, but by ever-changing household servants, causing attachment problems. Often, they were behind academically, because of servants who didn’t speak english very well.
And, of course, they had everything given to them, and developed little or no work skills. They developed an entitlement mentality, yet had very poor self esteem.
I think Ben Carson must have read his books, because he is absolutely right. It is amazing how well the Trump children have grown into such intelligent and hard working young people.
In the early 2000’s there was a documentary called “Born Rich”. It was made by a member the the Johnson & Johnson family. He interviewed several of his fellow ultra rich friends. They all came off as extremely screwed up, hated their families, and not very likable. There was a single exception: Ivanka Trump. It is on iTunes and is well worth a viewing.
Then he could make the point that being raised wealthy is not an excuse for affluenza boy, just look at the Trumps.
Look I wouldn’t use the term “disadvantage of wealth” but there is a point most kids of the wealthy turned out to be flaming spoiled brat a holes.
Wealth and Advantage is a corrupting influence on the moral character development..it just is...and you have to have integrity to not be corrupted by it.
It the reason you don’t just give a person money.. a person needs to work to actually earn their money
